While the drives appear to be operational, and I am using one of them now, I am very displeased with the way the drives were shipped. The two drives, in their little plastic sleeves, were simply tossed into a plastic bag with no padding or ESD protection whatsoever. I don’t know who decided this was a good idea, but it goes against every recommended treatment of a hard disk drive. The plastic bag was not gently handled, as shown by the condition of the bag. The plastic bags around the drives show evidence of impact and abrasion. I don’t know how this will affect the lifespan of the drives, but it certainly won’t improve it. Whoever is responsible for packaging such delicate electronic items needs to be held to a higher standard.I tried to find a place to tell Amazon, but if it exists I was unable to locate it, hence the product review. I did give it 5 stars because the drive looks like it works, but only time will tell.Update: I had to return the second drive as it was defective. Noisy rotation, clicking sound as the head was seeking, and never would initialize. Very likely the drive failed due to shipping damage.

Put 4 of these in my Synology 923+ and no problems at all. Compared to my other NAS running WD Red Plus 12TB drives, these IronWolf 12TB drives are indeed louder when booting up and writing. Nothing crazy but noticeable. Happy overall.

The other reviews aren’t kidding about how loud this drive is. I felt I was transported back to the 90s with those big loud hard drives in PCs that were measured in megabytes, not gigabytes. Back then it was just how things were, but it was kind of jarring after being solid state for so long hearing this drive spin up and seek.I installed this in a home NAS to better facilitate video editing workflow between my iPhone, Mac, and PC and so far it works extremely well. Will purchase a second for the other drive slot in my NAS when this one starts getting close to full.Seek times are pretty good, read and write times are also good. Was able to transfer several TB onto this after installation in a very reasonable amount of time. Very happy with the purchase and will purchase again in the future.

I have been using Seagate “mechanical” disk drives for decades on my servers. If you do not subject them to a lot of on-off cycles, they last many, many years.Warning on USB use: Many adapters and some computers will shut the drive off after so many minutes idle. That Destroys drives! (Internal wear on the head latching mechanism is the prime suspect in the dozens of drives I have dismantled to insure secure destruction and to salvage the powerful magnets. NEVER discard a drive without destroying the platters first! NEVER!) Disable automatic “power saving” shut off in your BIOS settings, as it will subject your drives to many power cycles and destroy ANY spinning disk, “mechanical” type drive!
