I bought the 4TB 990 Pro for my gaming build so I could store every game I own and still have room for more. It has not disappointed, providing speeds within 100 MBps of the advertised 7GBps. The specific SSD that I got was never updated from the original launch firmware and, contrary to what others have said, its speed did not drop and the percent usage did not jump up after a month of use. The only possible reason I can think of for having a different experience is that I used the VRM controller under IRST instead of the standard Windows AHCI controller. Still, since I knew that my drive had a higher chance of failure with the launch firmware, I decided to update it. Unfortunately, Samsung decided not to include support for Intel’s VRM controller in the Samsung Magician program, so I had to go through the whole process of disabling IRST in BIOS, booting into Safe Mode, then restarting. Just for reference, I had Magician test the read/write speeds in AHCI mode, and the SSD ran in the range of 600 to 800 MBps slower across the board when in AHCI mode. I was finally able to update the SSD firmware, then I went through the process of re-enabling IRST so I could go back to the prior speeds. When testing the read/write speeds after the firmware update, Magician showed that the drive was running 1 GBps slower than before in IRST mode. Initially, I thought the firmware update had messed up my SSD. However, after remembering that I had CrystalDiskMark, I decided to set both DiskMark and Magician to the same parameters and test the drive again once using each. As it turns out, Samsung Magician was under-reporting the speeds, possibly by erroneously including random speeds in the calculations for average sequential speeds. If Samsung Magician shows that your SSD’s performance has dropped significantly, I highly recommend double-checking using another program that can check disk read/write speeds, because chances are, your SSD is fine but Samsung Magician is bugged and displaying the wrong information. In short, this SSD works as advertised, Samsung has really had trouble with the programming side of things, and the SSD works better under the IRST VRM controller, even with the original firmware.

After installing the SAMSUNG 990 PRO w/ Heatsink SSD 2TB drive, I saw an immediate performance improvement. However, my computer occasionally restarted due to errors and booted from my old 970 EVO secondary drive because the 990 PRO was no longer visible to the system. When this happened, the blue light on the 990 PRO was not illuminated. Powering down the computer and restarting it would restore the 990 PRO as the boot drive, but the error would happen again.I tried moving the 990 PRO to a different M.2 socket, but the problem continued. Eventually, I enabled Full Performance Mode in Samsung Magician’s Performance Optimization menu, despite a warning message that it might cause excessive heat and void the warranty. Despite the warning, after changing to Full Performance Mode, Samsung Magician reports that the 990 PRO is running at a normal 37 degrees Celsius.Since enabling Full Performance Mode, I have not had any system lockups, unplanned restarts, or blue screen of death (BSOD) errors. I only had problems when running the Samsung 990 PRO drive in the Standard Mode or Power Saving Mode. I don’t know whether the problem is with the drive itself or the Microsoft NVMe Driver in Windows 11, but setting Samsung’s Full Performance Mode stops it from happening.I highly recommend these drives as long as they are configured in Full Performance Mode. I hope sharing my experience helps someone else avoid falsely concluding that the Samsung 990 PRO drives are trash due to an easily corrected configuration setting. My Windows 11 Pro system configuration:CPU: Intel Core i9-13900K,GPU: Nvidia RTX 3090,SSD: Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink 2TB (Boot Drive),SSD: Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVMe PCIe M.2 2TB (Secondary Drive),RAM: G Skill Intl F4-3200C16-16GVK 4x16GB,MBD: Asus PRIME Z790-P WIFI D4.

I got this to replace a 970 1tb nvme and this is quick and this model is a 2 tb drive and I I was able to install this very easily. I bought the one without the heatsink and kicked myself, so I ordered an aftermarket heatsink but my next one I get I will get the model that has the Samsung heat sink included. I have only been using it for a few days so I don’t know it it overheats but I will update my review if I have any problems or fine out something else to share.I am getting more of these.
