A deeply personal conversation about death and loss between a mother and her daughter, who is also the illustrator of the book. Filled with their particular warmth and love, but universal in reaching out to you as the reader. Everyone has or had a mother but probably most of us have never found the right moment to speak openly on this difficult topic. This beautiful book steps into the gap. Sons can read it as well as daughters, for love is universal.

I love this book! So far, I’ve purchased three copies – one for me and one for each of my daughters. There aren’t enough words in my vocabulary to express the depth and breadth of the emotions that “What to do When I’m Gone” evoked in me. Yes, death, inevitably, is accompanied by sorrow, and there are passages that brought tears to my eyes. But, mostly, this gem of a book made me smile and even laugh out loud, because it is more than just a book about loss, it is a book about the continuity of life, in all its wonderful complexity. This talented mother and daughter team have created a gift that will enrich the emotional life of everyone who reads it. Not only is it brimming with soulful advice and enticing recipes (although I might skip the peppermint in the brownies – but that’s just me), every page is alive with vibrant artwork that marks Hallie Bateman is an illustrator to watch. Being a mother or a daughter or even a woman is not a requisite – a friend of mine has ordered a copy for her son. I can almost guarantee that if you purchase one copy, you’ll be back for more. Enjoy!

I am going to put notes in the margins for my own daughters. In the face of my grief about losing my mother, this book brought comfort. Written by a mother and daughter, it offers up realistic advice and comfort about how to handle it when a mother (who you are close to) dies.I finished the margin notes today, and it was kind of a difficult thing to close the books. I bought two copies, one for each girl, and most of the comments are identical so they can each have their own copy. There are a few things individual to each girl. I highly recommend this as a book to give to an adult daughter, or even to a child who will eventually receive it.

My copy of this wonderful book arrived today. I opened it and couldn’t put it down until I’d finished. I laughed, I cried, and then I laughed even more. What a lovely legacy among mother and daughter. Although, as I read the book, I thought much of the wisdom could be shared by mother and son, aunt and neice, and so on. In our culture, we don’t talk enough about the eventuality of death. This story, so elegantly illustrated, is a gentle and fun way to start a meaningful conversation with a loved one on this important topic, and learn a few great recipes along the way.

I read this book started with the hope I would find something to teach my daughter, but later found out it taught me something, as a mother and as a daughter. A great book to read along with kids several times.

I follow Hallie and her artwork on-line. When she wrote that she and her mother worked on this book together, I took a chance and preordered it. When it arrived on our porch my husband and I both read it that evening. It is a wonderful warm-hearted book on what can be a challenging subject. It is a healing book (it can work backwards even if your mother has already passed away, even if you have managed to get yourself through the aftermath, and even if the person you think of often is a father or friend…) It also feels great to hold in your hands (find a copy and you’ll know what I mean). 💕
