It’s been a hot minute since we got word on what the PSVR2 was going to be, and now Sony has revealed the design of the PlayStation VR 2 headset. Originally announced at CES 2022, the final design is extremely reminiscent of the Oculus Quest 2, with eh ringed controls and white design, though that has been a part of Sony’s official design language since the reveal of the PlayStation 5, its accessories, and the original Playstation VR platform. They revealed the design over on the PlayStation Blog.

PSVR2 design & thermals

Sony states that on the design of the PSVR2 headset, they would ‘ create a headset that will not only become an attractive part of your living room decor, but will also keep you immersed in your game world, to the point where you almost forget you are using a headset or controller.’

They go on to further extrapolate that they ensured that the design’s weight was balanced, and kept a good distribution of the weight, with an adjustable headband, and scope. The placement of the headphone jack on the system remains the same, meaning that users who already have a Playstation VR will be familiar with its location. It’ll be incredibly interesting to see how new headsets like the Meta Quest 3 or Project Cambria will look like in design by comparison to this headset from Sony.

In addition to this is the lens adjustment dial, something that has since become standard on headsets like the Oculus Quest 2, which helps you personally adjust the distance of the lenses between their eyes for an optimal viewing experience, and to help alleviate any motion-sickness when using the PSVR2.

However, for a VR headset, thermals need to be a consideration, especially since the headset will be powering two OLED panels. Senior Art Director Yuijin Morisawa states:

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PS5 console that allows airflow. Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

Hopefully, this means that comfort is going to be key when it comes to experiencing the PSVR2. With only a single wire coming out of the device, and hooking up to your PlayStation 5, and using four cameras to track your movements on the headset itself, too.

Playstation VR2 Sense controllers

The controllers of the PSVR2 have also made their grand debut, and with the PSVR sense feature that Sony touts will give players a more tactile experience, especially with the haptic triggers that are present on these controllers, in addition to the Playstation 5’s Dualsense controllers that we’ve already experienced.

Sony says that they intend to comment further on the PlayStation VR 2 very soon, as we get more details, you’ll be sure to hear it here first. If you’re looking for one of your own, you can get one overt on waiting list here. For anything that you’ll want to know for the Playstation VR 2, be sure to check out our roundup where we go through all of the technical specifications that you need to know.
