I quite liked Avatar when it first came out. I know that’s not a bold statement as it is the most successful film ever, but I saw it in 3D at the time it was quite popular to slate it, but I enjoyed it. I have, however, never watched it since. It’s no Gremlins is it?
Anyway, the money-making industrial machine that is Disney is planning a new raft of Avatar films in the next ten years or so you can bet your bottom dollar they are going to be matched with games aplenty.
It will be interesting to see how the movies fare as CGI is far more commonplace now than it was when the original came out, with game graphics matching it in many ways.#
Anyway, Disney has teamed up with Tencent – basically, the Chinese Disney in terms of size and industry power and has announced Avatar: Reckoning – so besides a slightly foreboding subtitle, what is it and what do we know so far?
What is Avatar: Reckoning?
Well, for starters, it is a mobile game. I realize that is the point some of you will leave, so farewell, stay safe. But if you are still here and in the market for an Avatar-themed game for your iOS or Android device, read on.
Avatar: Reckoning is an MMO RPG shooter developed by Archosaur from China. They have done other mobile games previously such as Dragon Raja (nope, us neither), and will be developed in Unreal Engine 4.
Tencent will publish the game under the Level Infinite brand and said in the release:
“Avatar: Reckoning will transport players to never-before-seen parts of Pandora where they will meet new Na’vi clans fighting to defend their home, battle powerful RDA troops seeking to exploit the resources of the moon, and encounter spectacular alien creatures – all playable solo or in dynamic multiplayer matches. Players will level up their Avatar character, equip powerful weapons, and battle through single-player story missions, co-op and player-vs-player (PvP) game modes with innovative combat tailored for touchscreens.”
Avatar: Reckoning release date
All that is mooted at this stage is that we can expect the game before the end of the year (2022). There is a lot of wiggle room here and it could stretch into next year, but there has to be a connection between the release of the first new Avatar movie so we would expect it to arrive at a time either side of that, and Avatar 2 is currently slated for a December 16th release in cinemas.
What platforms will Avatar: Reckoning be release on?
Avatar: Reckoning is coming to iOS and Android but there are no specs yet. We would however be expecting it to require a fairly recent device as it promises to be fairly graphically intensive.
