Sony launches new X95K mini LED TV in 2022

Last Updated:

Alongside Sony’s new A95K QD-OLED TV, the brand will also be releasing the X95K – Sony’s first mini LED TV. The new “less premium” display will not feature the latest QD-OLED technology, opting for a mini LED backlight instead.

Sony’s X95K will be the first time the brand has implemented mini LED technology into a screen, offering up better peak brightness, greater HDR performance, and less blooming whence compared to the standard LCD alternative.

Sony X95K release date: What we know so far

While excitement grows for Sony’s new 2022 lineup of TVs, we still don’t have a concrete release date for any of the new SKUs just yet. However, insiders are speculating a summer launch for the new range of TVs – putting it bang in line with both LG’s C2 series and Samsung’s new QD-OLED range.

If that’s the case, we could see a whole slew of new TVs launch by July 2022, giving consumers a tonne of options to choose from – all of which will be sporting never before seen technology.

Sony X95K potential pricing

Again, there isn’t a lot of information regarding the price of Sony’s X95K mini LED TV series. However, if we’re to believe the recent A95K price leaks, it will likely be much more affordable than you might think.

Sony’s US website published the available rewards points for the A95K TV, leading many to believe that the 55 inch would be priced at $3,000.

As always, we’ll be keeping this page bang up to date as soon as we have further details of price and release dates.

Sony’s mini LED performance

So, as we’ve already stated, the X95K will be the first TV in the Sony series to feature mini LED backlight technology. But what exactly does that mean from a performance standpoint?

Well, in a nutshell, mini LED backlight technology offers smaller diodes (around 0.2mm) which enables the backlight to feature more local dimming zones. A TV equipped with more dimming zones automatically offers greater HDR performance with less blooming – as smaller areas of the backlight control fewer pixels.

Alongside this, the X95K will also feature the latest Sony XR backlight master Drive technology – an algorithm that effectively controls the min LED backlight. The Backlight Master Drive technology should help to reduce annoying backlight flickers that can often occur with LCD screens. Furthermore, it’ll allow the display to reach a higher maximum brightness for better HDR performance.

In addition to this, Sony will be equipping the X95K with the new Bravia XR cognitive processor which offers up better upscaling, tone mapping, and greater overall efficiency. We can also expect better contrast ratio via an updated algorithm and more realistic adjustments to color saturation.

Gamers will also be pleased to hear that the Sony X95K will also feature HDMI 2.1 functionality with full 48 GBp/s bandwidth. This will allow full support for 4K @ 120Hz gameplay for both Xbox series X and PS5.
