I love this product. It arrived very quickly, and was very easy to get going, and set up. Instructions came in the box, and are also available on Garmin’s website (manuals etc). Is it better than the sensor which comes on the device itself (fenix for example). I don’t really think so. Once you can tell how “innacurate” your temperature reading is on the fenix (because it’s built in and against one’s wrist), by comparing it to your smartphone’s temperature (using any weather app… for example it says it’s 75 degress outside where you are but your watch says its 85 … it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to look at the temp and deduct 5.. or 10 degress … whatever from the shown temp when your looking at it). But its nice to NOT have to do that too… which is why i bought one of these. Beside’s … i didn’t want to know, either, what the temperature was at the local airport.. or the inaccurate temperature of the wristwatch, because it’s against my sweaty arm. So i bought this.. the result? Its VERY easy to loose. So i “taped” it into the little snap-in holder it comes with, put a lanyard around it, and wear it around my neck. Even doing this.. if you read the documentation it comes with.. it tells you it will be innacurate (like the senser which which comes built into the watch anyways, because the thing is against your body, or in one’s pocket etc etc etc..). It tells you to hold it out (like clipped to one’s belt), away from one’s body heat to get a better reading. Unfortunately, ninety percent of people that try to do this? Loose the darned thing. Lol. Therefore, your better off doing what i did. Put a piece of tape around it, once you’ve got the better inside it, and string a lanyard through it and then allow it to hang from around your neck. It’s not weird looking at all, or you can put it under your shirt too.. because in the end? Its always the same temperature difference that the built into the watch sensor … sensor… is anyways. For example, i went for a walk this evening. When i left the house it was 68 degrees outside. The tempe’ unit claimed it was 84 degrees, because it was still warm from sitting on my bureau. After about ten minutes adjusting to the climate outside, it read between 74.2 and 77 degrees… which was between five and eight degrees off. Im sure in freezing cold temps it will be as inaccurate if not more so… But it was still worth the price to get the temp (minus adjustments one makes mentally for the outside temp vs the always seen temp difference noticed between your phone’s weather app and the temp listed on their own watch device; or whatever). You will get used to the difference and make the adjustment mentally without having to give it too much thought in no time.Again.. this device is VERY easy to loose.. so if you buy one. Be sure to “attach” it to you in some way. And then… if your watch vibrates (even though you haven’t reached one of your goals), be sure to double check the watch dial to see why it’s vibrating. It might be trying to tell you.. that you’ve lost contact with your tempe’ sensor. And you need to go and look for it back on the road someplace. Most workout pants have a small pocket for a house key, or a twenty or whatever for such small items, which also holds things sufficiently away from the heat of your skin, that it should be accurate enough. This is what i do when it’s not hanging from my neck.

I bought this to connect to my Garmin 550t GPS unit so I could record the temperature. It pairs easily with my GPS device, and stays paired all day long. I put this tempe device in a small zip-lock bag and affixed that to the pickup truck in a shady spot behind the cab, then kept the Garmin GPS device inside the truck with the “tracking” turned on. The Garmin 550t successfully generated a track entry every 10 seconds for the entire day (10 to 12 hours a day), and the temperature was written to each of those track entries! Perfect for recording the outside air temperature while I was traveling. I then use exiftool to place GPS coordinates, elevation and temperature data into each of the pictures I took with my camera (an Olympus OM-D EM-5 Mark II) when I got home. A perfect setup for me! A nice temperature device that works very well. I do not know how long the battery inside will last, but it lasted for 10 days being synched to the Garmin for 12 hours each day.

Overall, I have been satisfied with the Garmin Tempe Temperature Sensor, but like any product, knowing how to use it and its limitations will help you get the most out of it.First off, like any “thermometer”, it must be used correctly to be accurate. Thermometers / temperature sensors measure temperature most accurately “in the shade.” For instance, just like your home thermometer, if you place the Tempe in direct sunlight, it will heat up beyond the ambient temperature you are trying to read, and the measured temperature will be higher than the value you are trying to obtain. Along the same lines, if the sensor is mounted to close to your body or around a radiant heat source, it will skew the readings – the same as the Fenix would read too high on your wrist and why you bought the sensor in the first place! Thus, you need to think about where you mount it. Some have stated they mount it on their shoetop, tied off to the laces… however, if you think about it, that could potentially place the sensor be in direct sunlight while you hike, and also close to your body heat as your feet heat up. Thus it COULD affect the temperature reading you are getting.Likewise, you could mount it on your backpack – however, if the sun is beating on your back, and you mount it directly in the sun, it goes without saying your temp readings could be a little high. ESPECIALLY if your backpack is black or a dark color, and the sun’s rays are absorbing better and heating up your pack! So, I change the location of mounting based on conditions. If the sun is obscured by trees, clouds, etc, then the mounting position on my pack is not important. If the sun does come into play, I mount it under my pack on the bottom – being CAREFUL not to crush it or lose it if I take my pack off. Additionally, I have mounted it under the brim of my wide-brimmed Tilley hat, as long as the sun is not mercilessly beating on the brim above where it is mounted…. there are other options, and some I probably have not even thought of ;-), like anything, creativity comes into play!Bottom line is take care where you mount it if you want accurate readings; this might seem obvious to some, but just trying to help those that may not have experience with the Tempe. Finally, don’t expect instantaneous temperature adjustments when the “ambient” temperature changes suddenly or drastically in a short period of time. For instance – if you hold the Tempe in your closed hand for a while to coax the temperature reading on your watch / GPS above 90 degrees, then set it down on the table in a 65 degree environment, it will take 5 to 10 minutes for the temperature reading to stabilize…. this is common for ABC watches and devices, the reading change is not instantaneous, and stailization takes a little time. This is because it takes a little time for the Tempe itself to lose the heat it has generated, and for the plastic body / housing to come back to equilibrium with its surroundings. Also, the watch is not polling the Tempe device continuously, and the changes registered on the watch are not instantaneous.Bottom line Is this is a cool device as it measures ambient temperature AWAY from my body temp if I wish, and registers that data on my watch, GPS and into logs for my hike!! Five stars.

Felt the “long time to connect drama” in the flesh and almost returned this little thing. If this is by design from the Garmin team or not, I no longer care. Tested with my 735XT and 745 watches and in both situations the little TEMPE was able to connect while activity was already happening.Attached picture should help to explain my tests. The red curve is heart rate whereas the grey area is Temperature. In both situations, TEMPE connected a couple of seconds after activity was started and picked it up from there. See heart rate reading is always there, for instance. Note, however:- on 735XT: the readings begin nearly 1 minute after activity started;- on 745: this watch itself has a temperature sensor and is on my wrist level. Once TEMPE was connected, the temperature readings have dropped. After all, this little device is almost on ground level, it is winter season and the windows were open in the gym.Case closed to me. Five stars as it does what I was expecting it would.

Love it works great we use it on the gps 64 with s ( S stands for sensors ) you can put the temperature in the right-hand screen and look at it when you hike or walk or drive etc….. It’s worked great for our handheld 64 series Garman GPS unit thank you, 64 series with sensor 64s, 64st, 64scHundred percent works every time no problem so far this is an update 64 series GPS This is an update Yes the temperature sensor can take up to 15 to 20 minutes to adjust between an indoor temperature in an outdoor temperature, as long as the temperature sensor is really close to you it tends to keep the temperature display up if the distance between the temperature sensor and your unit start to become a little greater you will notice that it loses its self and then catchs that self again it searches for itself 15 to 20 seconds and then it all we display itself. We’ve been using the temperature sensor for a while it works great but works has listed above. Again if were indoors and it’s 70° and we go outside and it’s 20° it can take 15 minutes give or take for the sensor to adjust. Battery life currently we have not had to replace the battery and use it regularly will update you when we have to change the battery but it’s been working for months and no battery changes needed currently

Have this temp gadget for 7+ months now, still great battery life. Ok, not a whole lot of proof for battery life, but it works. I have it connected to my Garmin watch and it will auto connect if you have an activity running. It doesn’t seem to stay connected continuously, but it will almost always connect immediately on-demand. I have it wrapped on my bike so that I can accurately obtain the ambient temperature. If you need to find out what the current temperature is outside or in the space you are located then this is a good gadget to use. Recommended.

I bought this in September 2017 and it has been through a lot over the last 1.25 yrs. I’ve been hiking, camping, fishing, running, all sorts of outdoors adventures and it has held up fantastically. I use a small ziptie around it to help secure it into the holder because this sensor dangles on my pack or jacket and I just don’t want it falling off out in the wilderness. When I run with it, I put it on top of the tongue but inside my shoe laces and I use a small nite-eyez carabiner to, again, hold it securely. I don’t even notice it is there on my shoe as I run either. The only ding that I would give it is the holder doesn’t feel very secure to me so I have taken extra steps to prevent me from losing it. I have ran through mud puddles, slushy snow, camped in the rain and it has never failed to link up to my 5X. It is slow to link, though, BUT there are quite a few apps that will report live data as you are out and about. I love this and would definitely buy it again.

I got this along with my gpsmap 62sc, and I’ll say it has made my hiking experience very interesting. Pairing it with the GPS unit is very easy… so easy that it’s not even really documented in the manual. For the gpsmap 62sc, you go to the menu, then to ADT settings, and select “search” or “find” or something, then put the battery in the tempe. It’s a little bit slow with the uptake sometimes, but I suppose that’s to be expected. The range seems to be pretty decent, about 15ft line of sight. The clipping system is very secure, I don’t worry at all about having it knocked off something. My first inclination was to clip it to a belt loop, but I realized that between my body heat and my shirt covering it it would get a skewed reading. I now clip it to the back of my pack when I take my pack, and to my the crossing laces in the middle of my shoe when I don’t have my pack. My pack is black, though, as is the tempe, so when I’m hiking in the sun, even if it’s 30 degrees out, it would report as 50F or higher. Finding a place to put it that was both out of the sunlight and not right up against my body is something I have not yet been able to do.
