The Compari-Shopper –
This headset is not perfectly perfect in every way but it is the best that you can buy. This is the only headset in the Plantronics lineup listed as having “premium” quality sound. It is Plantronics’ flagship headset. Plantronics is the industry leader in earpiece headsets. If you are looking for the highest-quality headset you can buy, look no more. You have come to the right page. The primary complaint I’ve read about on the Plantronics customer service site is that after two years the battery will die a natural death due to old age. So do realize that this will not last forever. If your battery dies while the headset is under warranty, that’s too soon and Plantronics will replace it. If your battery dies in less than 2 years but out of warranty, Plantronics is currently offering customers substantial discounts to buy replacements. (Save your receipt! Scan it if you’re paperless. Or buy it from Amazon where they will keep a record for you.)I just bought my second one – the first lasted about 4 years for me with light use. I did read that some can get extra life out of their battery by putting the headset into a ziploc and then into the freezer overnight… so if you’re here for a replacement, you might try that first and buy a little more time. I got a few extra months out of mine by discarding the (optional accessory) case I was using to charge it and by charging it directly through the OEM cord that came with it (so save that too!).WHAT YOU GET:Packaging is Easy to Open: there is a large sticker sealing the opening to the smallish box closed. That is easily cut with a pair of scissors. Then pull out the cardboard wings that are tucked into slots on each side of the front of the box and open it up.- Plantronics headset (battery is permanently installed)- Proprietary charging cord with separate wall plug- Two additional ear plugs — larger and smaller than the one preinstalled on the headset- Foam covers for the ear plugs, to use or not as you prefer- Instruction Booklet- Instructions on Firmware Update- Safety Warnings- Some stuff in another languageThe cord is USB on the wall end and proprietary on the headset end (only matches the headset). That means that you can plug the cord into the computer to get firmware and software updates from Plantronics (which is the first thing that they recommend you do upon unpackaging your headset). The cord is short, just under 10″ long (without the connectors). It’s easy to change the ear plugs in and out so that you can try different sizes. You just press in and turn to the left. To insert one, you press in and turn to the right. (All of this is in the instruction book.) I found that I could use the small or the medium. I’m a 5’7″ woman who weighs more than she should but you wouldn’t hate sitting next to me on a plane. The ear plug sits loosely just inside your ear. You may not even feel it. It’s definitely not a snug fit and you will hear surrounding sounds in both ears. What keeps the headset in place is the rest of it, not the ear plug. The boom mic is adjustable. I found it was directly pointed toward my mouth in it’s lowest position. The device has a call button on the round part, from which the boom extends. That’s for taking and ending calls if you don’t want to use voice commands, which also work. On the underside of the boom is another button that mutes calls among other things. There is a volume rocker on the upper back part of the largest part of the device — the part that goes behind the ear. And below that is the on/off switch. At the bottom of the back is the charging connector — just a bit of recessed coppery looking metal. It reads “Plantronics” in very subtle small pale gray lettering at the bottom of the largest part of the device, on both sides. You can see where it is in the small shiny black part at the bottom of the picture. If you have the right expectations (it’s not a magic genie… It may only last for two years… A very few of them will be defective and will require replacement…), you will be delighted with your purchase. You will not find better sound quality anywhere else. If you are used to music headphones, the looser, more open feel of the headset in your ear (or barely touching the front of your ear), might take some adjustment.I highly recommend this product and am confident that, if after reading this review you still want it, you will not be disappointed.UPDATE: One feature I have come to really appreciate is the voice commands. Some parts of my house get spotty cell phone reception. So, when I’m wearing the headset (during work hours), I always leave my phone in a “good reception area” of the house. If a call comes in, I don’t have to rush back to the headset to pick it up, I just say, “answer” and the headset picks up the call. If the caller is in my address book, the phone will announce who’s calling. If I’m silent or say “decline,” the call is not picked up.

I love the features of this device. It has voice commands that allow me to use my iPhone completely hands free. I can listen to incoming texts, send texts, make phone calls and even ask directions and get information from my phone without touching my phone. It has clear sound and, with the right earpiece, it comfortable on my ear. I wear eyeglasses all day long that have thick earpieces. Because of this the earpiece does not sit “under” my glasses, but “beside” the earpiece of my glasses. This makes the unit sit on my ear a little differently than I think it should. However, it will still stay on my ear all day as long as I don’t bump it or move my hair around it too much. (I am a female with long, full hair.) The device can become dislodge off my ear and I have to put it back on. Although annoying at times, I believe it is caused more by my large ear piece on my glasses than the design of the headset. It connects to my phone instantly with no delays. I also like the verbal indication of my battery power level. It charges easily although the cord could be longer. I set my earpiece on a desk with the power plug also on the desk. The cable to charge is only 1 ft long so I don’t know of any other way it could be charged.I use this to stream music from my phone. I noticed that you can’t give voice commands while the music is playing. You must pause the music (or podcast) before using voice commands. I also plug my iPhone into the USB of my car while I am driving to charge the phone and listen to music at the same time. The earpiece will NOT work while the phone is connected to my car. I have to unplug the cable to my iPhone before I can use the voice commands or stream through the ear piece. If I receive a phone call while plugged into the car, I CAN answer the call through the earpiece. All in all, I love the versatility of the headset.I am COMPLETELY deaf in my right ear so I wear the headset on my left side. The best part is I can still hear in my left ear while wearing the headset. This is extremely important to me as I can still have conversations with people or hear other sounds while wearing the headset. The ear piece does NOT block the hearing in my ear. So it is NOT an ear “plug” that sits down inside the ear canal. I have worn this all day and don’t notice it’s presence when I’m not using it.This is the first Bluetooth earpiece I have ever owned. I used ear buds with a wire plugged into the phone before. Since I’m deaf in my right side I didn’t need the right side of the earbuds plugged in but needed the microphone on the wire on the right side to have phone conversations. The ear buds blocked my hearing so I couldn’t hear other people while they were in my ear. This headset has been wonderful at eliminating that problem and is MUCH more comfortable to wear. Makes me ask why I didn’t get one of these a long time ago.I read other reviews that commented on the poor charging connection. Apparently, that has been fixed because my charging cable “snaps” in place and is held tightly to the device while charging. I have had no charging problems.

This headset has been on the market for quite some time, but it’s a really nice headset by a company that excels in noise cancellation for headset calling. This works nicely, I’ve owned at least 3 over the years, and keep bying them due to the quality of calls and comfort and fitment. Nice battery life on them lasts about 5-6hrs or so of talking on a charge, longer on standby. Cancels out background noise nicely, and has been loud enough for my liking.

I can’t even begin to count how many different bluetooth headsets I’ve tried. This has been the best one, by far. While it is expensive, consider the amount of money and time that you can waste by trying out less expensive headsets. Over the years, I’ve probably spent several-fold the cost of this one on various sets; each one of them having had “I can’t hear you” or “can you repeat that” being reverberated through their earpieces, over and over.Equipment I’ve used this with:1. Iphone 4S – Great!2. Cisco SPA525G2 IP Phone – Great!3. Mac Mini – Great!Pros:1. The people whom I’ve spoken to have not had any issues hearing me. People have even made note of the transmission clarity.2. If you’re away from your phone, it will announce who’s calling.3. Fairly comfortable. You have to play around and figure out which of the included earpieces is right for you, but once you do, then the device is decently comfortable. I’ve even worn glasses with it and it’s been fine.4. Can connect to 2 devices simultaneously, but can apparently remember more than 2 devices. The earpiece can connect to any two of the three devices (that I listed above) without any re-pairing.Cons:1. Sometimes a little slow to pick up a signal. For example, from the time I press the talk button, and until it connects to my Cisco phone, a few seconds have elapsed. Not the end of the world, though.2. Price. I have to admit that I was extremely apprehensive about spending this amount on a headset, given the experiences that I’ve had with other ones. But it’s like dating…you may go out with a bunch of people whom you don’t connect well with, but then you find a person who’s awesome.3. It can occasionally be difficult to hear the person with whom I’m speaking to, but 90% of the time, I don’t have this issue. So for that remaining 10%, I can’t necessarily say that the headset is at fault. There are many other possible variables to factor in.Tips:1. Don’t waste your money on the desk dock thing. If you get a piece of double-sided foam mounting tape (I like the Scotch 3M kind), you can just stick the charging end onto your desk. The earpiece will easily drop on to it and stay there. Remember, it’s a magnetic charger, similar to how apple does their macbook chargers.Notes:1. I haven’t gotten to try this in the car since my car has a bluetooth system built-in. Haven’t gotten to try it outside yet either. But even in a moderately noisy office, it’s good.2. Like all bluetooth devices, this does have a relatively short range. Not the headset’s fault. In an open space, the range actually is decent.3. I’ve been using this for about 5 weeks now. I’ll update my post should things change.4. If you’re using this solely in an office environment, then you’re better off getting a “DECT”-type headset. You’ll get even better range and clarity.

Update (2023-07-02):I’m leaving my previous review intact below and adding a few thoughts. Most of it still applies to some extent. But … this is the best headset I’ve ever had for my purpose, and I still can’t find anything better. I don’t talk on the phone any other way.Better? Noise cancellation and sound quality has been good on most of the 11 I’ve owned (yes, 11). I think some were counterfeits. Everyone can understand me on the other end, and many I’ve talked to had no clue I was going down the road (even with the windows down). The last one I bought was in December of 2022. I have two that still work fine. I don’t know if the most recent failure is one of the more recent purchases, or a very old one. It literally wore out. The last two that failed lost their skins. I bought my first one in April of 2016.I only have one reason for not upgrading to the 5200. I despise micro-USB. I love the magnet connector for these. I can just reach up and pull it off the charge cable and put it on my ear while driving with minimal distraction. I carry two on the truck within reach so that when one battery gets low the other is right there. I can even snap the charger on the headset without having to see it. Try that with micro-USB. So, if you have time and patience to fiddle with micro-USB, by all means get the 5200. It’s a better headset in every way, except for that.Poly seems to have migrated this headset over much better than they had at the beginning of 2023. There’s a new app, and it works. I haven’t tried to update the headset online with a PC since the end of 2022.If Poly would update this headset’s internals, and leave the size, shape, and charger intact, I’d pay more for that one than another one of these. If I knew that they had, I’d be buying one from their website. There are numerous SKUs of this headset. There’s no way for us mere mortals to know what the differences are, if any. I suspect that one or two of the FFP models were counterfeit, but I’m going to gamble again. The warranty will be out long before any problems become apparent. Then I’ll buy another one … or the Voyager Legend 2024.I am buying another one so I’ll have two spares. Only 2 of the 11 are left. I started keeping one at home too. My wife is still using a 5200, but she has a couple of these … somewhere.Previously (circa January 2023):I think I’ve purchased my last Legend, even though I haven’t tested it yet. It’s time to find something better, and that’s going to be hard. My ear fits these too well.Be aware that this headset appears to no longer be fully supported online. Plantronics is now Poly. I just downloaded the latest version of Plantronics Hub from Poly’s support site, which appears to be the remnants of Plantronics support site. When I run the Plantronics Hub and try to update the headset I get, “Plantronics Hub is unable to connect to the server.” I suspect that the update server no longer exists, though I can’t be sure. The most recent firmware version is v.109, and may be the last one. That doesn’t take away from the quality and usefulness of the headset at all. It’s still the best noise-cancelling headset I can comfortably wear. Driving a truck I wear one all the time.Having said all that, I have had issues with some of the ones I’ve purchased more recently, and my wife has too. Some of them don’t cancel noise as well as others, though they all come up as the same product, and the same firmware version. Early on, they were all flawless. Lately, they’re not. We’ve had a couple that failed before we managed to destroy them ourselves. And it’s possible that more modern devices don’t connect as well to the older version of bluetooth these support. This is a very good legacy product.Last note: My wife has one of the newer 5200s, and didn’t like it nearly as well as these.

Its easy to pair to a devise, and right out of the box, it paired and connected to my laptop-Windows 11. I have a dictation software on the laptop, and with this bluetooth device I can dictate quietly into a MS Word doc. I can walk around the room while dictating, and find very few errors – sometimes none.I have tried other headphones, bluetooth or hard connected headsets – but this plays well with Nuance Dragons Professional V 16 speech recognition software. If I were writing a book or brainstorming, this is perfect. It beats out the recommended bluetooth headset for Dragon, that headset cheap, easy to break while adjusting it to the ear, and that headset costs $150.Thumbs up!
Geek Girl –
This is easily the best bluetooth headset I’ve ever used. I have had the pleasure of testing out many different bluetooth models for various manufacturers, and the issue I always run into is comfort. I have small ears so the over the ear designs are always falling off, and the ones that rely on an earbud alone to stay in place have always been too big to fit properly and end up popping out as well. While the “default” earbud that comes with the headset is too big for my ear, it includes two other sizes, one smaller and one larger. The smaller one fits well and the foam replacements you can buy here on Amazon fit even better. I have worn this for hours while talking to my fiance on a long road trip and it stayed comfortable the entire time and never fell off once.Comfort and fit is a big deal to me, but call quality is also extremely important. I’ve tried calling many different people, on various different phones. All reported that I came through loud and clear, which is a big deal for me because I tend to speak softly and if I don’t have a boom right in front of my mouth, I’m often not heard well or at all. The boom on the Voyager Legend, even though it doesn’t come anywhere near my mouth, is able to pick up my voice easily and deliver it clearly. I also did a few tests to try out the background noise filtration and I am absolutely amazed. I called my fiance while in a car with 3 other people talking and laughing with each other and noise playing quite loudly. He reported that he heard none of it, only some muffled sounds he couldn’t distinguish but weren’t at all distracting or obtrusive. I didn’t quite believe him, so I tested it myself in a similar scenario and was very surprised at how well it blocks out everything but the caller’s voice. It’s a great feature if you’re constantly on the go and around other people. I am buying one for him now because every time he’s driving in his Mustang, I can barely hear him over the noise of the car, especially when he’s running the AC.Incoming call quality is also superb. I had been using Apple earbuds with my iPhone 6 Plus for months because none of my other headsets were comfortable for long periods of time or stayed in place. I had been craving a wireless headset as I tend to talk a lot throughout the day and I don’t like being tied down to my phone. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I had my earbuds and/or iPhone yanked away because I got hooked on something. The Voyager Legend is so light and comfortable, I completely forget it’s there until I get an incoming call. I wasn’t sure if I’d be okay with wearing it all the time due to wanting to avoid the whole techie nerd look, but even with the extended boom, my long, dark hair covers it almost entirely. Even when it doesn’t, I don’t think it looks bad at all. In fact, it’s the nicest looking bluetooth headset I’ve seen. The Voyager Legend doesn’t skimp on other features, either. You have access to a completely hands free device at all times. When a call comes in, you will be told who is calling and then asked if you want to answer the call. You can say “answer” or “ignore”. You can also push the call button to answer as well as disconnect. Pushing the talk button while not on a call will prompt you for a voice command. If you have an iPhone, you can hold the call button to activate Siri. The mute button also has multiple functions. It can mute/unmute the call and can also pause or resume music playback. It’s nothing super fancy, but it’s all I need. One of my favorite features is the auto answer/disconnect feature when the headset is put on or taken off. If I have the headset in my purse and I get a call, I can put it on and it answers the call automatically.Another huge bonus for me was purchasing the optional charging case. The Voyager Legend provides an estimated 7 hours talk time and it seems to hold true to that. However, I take a lot of road trips and I needed a way to charge it on the go. The charge case charges in 90 minutes and will recharge your headset twice on a single charge. It’s fairly compact and protects the headset very well with it’s hard shell, so it’s perfect to toss in my purse. It charges the headset pretty quickly. From what I’ve seen, you can’t use the headset while it’s charging so this was a must have for me. I also purchased the desktop charger which holds the headset in place nicely so there’s no fear of it accidentally getting under something and getting broken. Even if the extra chargers aren’t needed, an extra charging cable is highly recommended. It uses a magnetic charger, much like the MacBook chargers, and can only be charged with the included cable (unless you purchase the charge case). The included cable is extremely short, but you can buy a spare for cheap here on Amazon and it’s much longer. It’s always nice to have a back up, especially for such a unique cable that can’t be found in most local stores if you happen to lose your original one.Overall, it was a great purchase and I’m so glad to have it. My other headsets are collecting dust now!

I’ve had many head sets and needed a replacement due to losing the last one. (only lost one so far) Liked this brand as all have been from this company. so far everything works well. it does cause a little bit of a fit issue but I’ll experiment and get it solved. I recommend it.
Jodi Jackson –
My husband a truck driver has been using this brand for years. He loves it. Trucks have a lot of background noise and this is great for blocking it out. Last a long time.

This has been an excellent purchase. I had to look up the date to confirm. I purchased these in April of 2016 and still going strong (currently Feb 2024!) 7 years no issues! I should really start having birthday party’s for this thing! 🙂 Pairs quickly and easily, sound is great, battery lasts a couple days, with intermittent use. I would absolutely recommend this product.
