I received my order just in time to take it with me on an ocean kayaking trip. Before heading out, I wanted to get acquainted with it. Needless to say, after reading the manual, inserting batteries (more on batteries in a sec), and stepping through the channels, I was ready to go. Literally, it is that easy. Just read the guide, it will step you through the way. What I like is that this radio offers a triple weather alert. Meaning it’s monitoring multiple channels every 2 seconds. I realize that is more for boats/vessels, but I feel safer knowing it is available to me. I also like the big clip that you snap on the back. I tried it on my PFD (*before heading to the water), it fits perfectly by clipping on with no problems. One thing to be mindful of. DONT USE THE BATTERIES THAT COME WITH IT! Through the setup and learning process, which requires you to turn the radio on and off for a few settings, depleted the batteries to halfway. This could be a danger if you’re out on the water and have an emergency and need to make multiple calls for assistance. So, I switched out the crappy batteries and inserted my own. I played with it for like 20 min just to see if maybe my unit was faulty etc., or if it was the batteries. Sure enough, after all my turning it on and off, changing backlit color (which is super cool btw), the batteries I inserted did not drain the battery. So my radio is fine, it was just the batteries that come with it are terrible. So take them out, replace them with new batteries, and go enjoy your day on the water. Trust me, you will feel much safer having this awesome radio with you. Cheers.

Excellent value, with full range of US and Int. waters frequencies, no GPS, simple operation. Ideal spare/dinghy unit. Includes charger cable for ship/car 12 volt systems; AC charger is not included, but I recommend getting one, unless yacht uses shore hookup. Around 10 hours for full charge from zero.

Seems like a good quality radio. We use marine radios at work to help communicate and dock container ships. Purchased my own so I don’t have to track down the company owned radios. I’d recommend!

This radio is a bargain but doesn’t include the charging cable. You can open the back and charge the NiMH batteries as a standard AAA NiMH but the unit includes a charging port. There is no information about the voltage or cable type. Fortunately, I have Yaesu radios with the AC/DC charger cables. They fit, the 12VDC is correct voltage and I confirmed that charging works. Make sure you get the right cable, standard 12VDC chargers are a larger pin-out.

Great price. Great product. Can hear transmission from over 15 miles on a handheld.

Capsized in my kayak at night and wasn’t able to self-rescue. Despite the radio being submerged in the water for a long time, I was still able to call for help and communicate clearly with the coast guard. I had a lobster boat there to assist within minutes. I would say it has already paid for itself a million times over. Be aware, this unit does not come with a wall charger, I was able to purchase one separately for short money.

Used during canoe trip in an area with poor cell phone reception. Severe thunderstorm popped up out of nowhere (forecast in the morning when we left was sunny weather, 20% chance of light showers). My son thought it would be interesting to hear boats communicating and we ended up hearing that a fast-moving severe thunderstorm was headed our way. We changed course and made it to shore right before the storm hit. Since this radio really helped us out, I highly recommend it!

I wish this product could be charged using AC instead of DC. I use this product on my boat and had to leave it overnight to charge the first time.

Item is easy to operate. Everything appears to be functional. I have yet to test it for range on water. I purchased this radio for safety & communication while on water. Best bang for the dollar.
