The latest addition to the Pokemon franchise is out soon, and with it… that ever-difficult task. Choosing your starter Pokemon. Unlike the last games, you’re not met with three fresh new faces, instead old familiar ones. Cyndaquil, Oshawott and Rowlet, a selection of starters from multiple generations. It’s a first, but at the very least you’re not required to pick one of new faces. At the very least, with these starters, you know what to expect.
So naturally, now you want to know which one to pick. Which is the Pokemon Legends Arceus Best Starter? Usually, it’s best to just go with your gut and pick the starter who beckons to you. Pick based on your own personal preference, that tends to be the norm. However, you could also be a Pokemon player who’s out to win, taking on Hisui and barrelling your way through every and all wild Pokemon that might get in your way. To do that, you’re going to need the strongest Pokemon from the very start of your journey.
Here’s the most exciting part for players, the final evolution of each of these starters features a type-mix we’ve not seen in our starters before. And thus, leads to more opportunities. Each with their own special weaknesses, some more than others. So if you’re looking for the strongest starter, look no further than the type. Thanks to the Arceus leaks, we now know all the final evolution typeing of the starters. So if you’re not interested in seeing their types, beware of spoilers ahead!
Hisuian Typhlosion — Fire/Ghost
The fire and ghost type is so rare in Pokemon that when we see it here, on one of our starters. You might understand why Typhlosion is already looking to be Legends Arceus‘s favourite starter. In fact, the only other fire/ghost Pokemon are the Litwick line-up, Blacephalon and Alolan Marowak.
Weaknesses
As a fire/ghost type, Hisuain Typhlosion is weak to:
- Ground
- Rock
- Ghost
- Water
- Dark
Resistances
As a fire/ghost type, Hisuain Typhlosion is resistant to:
- Poison
- Steel
- Fire
- Grass
- Ice
- Fairy
- Normal
- Fighting
- Bug
Hisuian Samurott — Water/Dark
The Watr/Dark type isn’t anything new, it’s been seen before especially in other starters (Greninja) but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad match-up. In fact, the Water/Dark type can still hold its ground in a fight. Other Water/Dark types we’ve seen in the past are: Carvanah, Sharpedo, Greninja and Crawdaunt.
Weaknesses
As a water/dark type, Hisuain Samurott is weak to:
- Fighting
- Bug
- Grass
- Electric
- Fairy
Resistances
As a water/dark type, Hisuain Samurott is resistant to:
- Ghost
- Steel
- Fire
- Water
- Ice
- Dark
- Psychic
Hisuian Decidueye — Grass/Fighting
It’s not a set of starters without one of them becoming a fighting type. Like Samurott, we’ve seen this type match-up before. We’ve seen it in previous starters too, but again grass and fighting is still a powerful combo. Other grass/fighting Pokemon we’ve seen are Breloom, Virizion and Chesnaught.
Weaknesses
As a grass/fighting type, Hisuain Decidueye is weak to:
- Flying
- Poison
- Fire
- Psychic
- Ice
- Fairy
Resistances
As a grass/fighting type, Hisuain Decidueye is weak to:
- Ground
- Rock
- Water
- Grass
- Electric
- Dark
In short…
With Hisuain Typhlosion having the most type resistances, and a reasonable five type weaknesses. The fire/ghost type is the best choice, having the best type match up as well as the most unique. That being said, although it’s the strongest of the three, Hisuain Samurott is a pretty great counter to Hisuain Typhlosion, being resistant to both ghost and fire. But weighing all the options, the fire starter is the best one out of all and will probably take you the farthest.
