How to get the Owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Last Updated:

To the delight of everyone. Larian has allowed players to recruit an Owlbear cub into their game’s camp. Keeping a pet Owlbear in your close quarters might not seem like the best idea but it certainly is an alluring one. However, it’s not as easy as picking the cub up, you’ll need to jump through quite a few hoops before you can bring your new pet back to camp.

Owlbear Location

First thing’s first, you need to find the Owlbear cave. There you’ll find the mother Owlbear and her cub.

You’ll find the Owlbear cave entrance just after encountering the dwarvern True Soul and his siblings. If you follow the tracks down to the nearby river, you’ll spot the cave entrance just on the other side of the river. Once you go in, you’ll enter a small cave system, follow it as you would naturally, and eventually you’ll encounter the Owlbear just at the end of the cave.

The biggest downside to wanting to have the cub is that the quickest way to get it means you need to get rid of the mother. Obviously, you might not feel too grand about that, but it is the only way to get the cub. Either you can kill it, or knock it out. But here’s a tip, if you engage in combat and knock it out, then go for a long rest and return, you’ll find Goblins ‘finished’ the job and stole the cub.

Goblins took the Owlbear!

At this point, without its mother to defend it, the cub is taken by the Goblins. Here, you’ll find the cub, and upon talking to it you’ll meet Krolla, one of the goblins who boasts about their new game, Chicken-Chasing. After talking to the cub, and succeeding in two animal handling checks, it’ll agree to go to your camp, but only after the goblins are gone. Needless to say, you’ll need to be able to talk to the cub by using Speak with Animals. Or you can turn into an animal yourself – as a druid – and talk to it that way.

At this point, you’ll need to do one of two things. Deal with the Goblins in whatever way you see fit. Whether that’s by eliminating them all one by one, starting from the outside drunken goblins, or rooting them out from the inside. But here’s a heads-up, the easiest way to deal with the drunken ones are by poisoning their drink. Otherwise, when you deal with the inside ones, the outside Goblins will attack you on sight and you will very quickly be surrounded and swarmed. Or you can talk to Krolla and you’ll have a series of options: intimidate, persuade, buy the cub for 500 gold, or use your Illithid wisdom. Naturally, the illithid powers are the easiest and quickest way to get it, but not without a cost, obviously.

At this point, Krolla will give you the Owbear and your character will remark upon the poor thing and hopes that it’ll be able to follow your scent back to camp. Thankfully, it will do and next time you get to the camp, you’ll have a new addition to the camp squad! But don’t worry if it’s not there right away, some players have remarked that it can take a few nights before the cub shows up.
