Fortnite hotfix nerfs Stinger SMG and MK-Seven AR

Last Updated:

Epic Games has announced changes to the most popular weapons in Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1.

Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 1: Flipped brought with it a completely new rotation of weapons, meaning players had to get used to a whole new loadout. While different players will of course prefer different weapons, there are always a few that come out as clear favorites, and the Stinger SMG and MK-Seven AR have been those so far this season. That may be about to change, though, as they are nerfed in an unexpected hotfix on January 13th, 2022.

Fortnite Hotfix January 13th, 2022 — Stinger SMG nerf

Epic Games have announced that Stinger SMG damage has been reduced. This is unsurprising given that it’s a firm favorite among players for being able to severely damage opponents in a very short time, often taking players by surprise with no time to retaliate.

The high fire rate of the Stinger SMG remains the same, which some Twitter users have noted requires little skill to use efficiently. While the Stinger SMG fire rate would have been the other thing Epic Games could have decreased to bring it more in line with other weapons, the developer says they will “continue to evaluate this as the season evolves”, so we could see further changes in time.

Fortnite Hotfix January 13th, 2022 — MK-Seven Assault Rifle nerf

fortnite hotfix SMG nerf MK-Seven AR

The MK-Seven Assault Rifle is another new weapon this season, replacing the Assault Rifle, Heavy AR and the Burst AR of past seasons. Similar to the Scoped Assault Rifle of old, the MK-Seven does have a scope, meaning the MK-Seven provides better accuracy at greater distance than other ARs. This is a great way of minimising your load out, as you could have an MK-Seven instead of a Ranger AR and a Sniper Rifle.

Before now, the MK-Seven was a firm favorite among Loopers not just for its range, but its damage as well, with the only downside being the closer-range limitations that come with the scope. As such, the MK-Seven damage has been decreased in this hotfix in order to make it slightly less powered, and perhaps increase the popularity of the Ranger Assault Rifle.

Fortnite Hotfix January 13th, 2022 — Auto Shotgun boost

Meanwhile, the reload speed on the Auto Shotgun has been slightly increased, meaning less time between shots. Chapter 3’s Auto Shotgun has not seen as much popularity as the older Pump Shotgun and Tactical Shotgun, both of which were firm player favorites in previous seasons. Hopefully this small change, along with the SMG nerf, will bring the Auto Shotgun back in-line with other current weapons and see it used more in-game.

This change comes during Tornado Week in Fortnite, a week of increased weather activity in Battle Royale matches to celebrate the release of the dynamic weather mechanic.
