AMD’s next-generation RDNA 3 to use 5nm and 6nm nodes

Last Updated:

It’s going to be quite a year for AMD, with news that their new line of RDNA 3 graphics cards are going to be using both 5nm and 6nm processes, as first reported by Videocardz. These have not been officially confirmed by AMD, but it’s as close as we’re going to get to one for now. RDNA 3 is poised to drop at the tail end of 2022, potentially clashing with the arrival of the AM5 platform and the Zen 4 launch as we covered here. Curiously, this latest report comes from a LinkedIn profile of an AMD employee, who is fairly senior in the team.

This staff member has listed Navi31 (5nm, 6nm), Navi32 (5nm, 6nm), and Navi33 (6nm) in their LinkedIn profile, which points to a mixture of the two processes being used amongst the stack of the GPUs. We can ascertain from this that the Navi 31 and Navi 32 will then in turn be the more cutting-edge GPUs, which will be using an MCM design in the 5nm process, and the 6nm module will be the only monolithic-style chip in the RDNA 3 offering.

We don’t yet know what the chip breakdowns on RDNA 3 GPUs look like, but you can at least expect the following from AMD’s latest generation of GPUs which are bound to astound when they turn up later this year, and go up against Nvidia’s RTX 4000 series, whenever they decide to land. It’s been pretty hot on the AMD front this week, and surprisingly quiet on the Nvidia side, so we’re bound to have at least a few leaks coming from their side soon. Whether that be leaked designs of the Founders Edition cards or otherwise, get ready for another barrage of GPU leaks throughout the rest of the year.

RDNA 3 GPU list

  • Radeon RX 7900 XT: (AMD Navi 31-based)
  • Radeon RX 7800 XT: (AMD Navi 31-based)
  • Radeon RX 7700 XT: (AMD Navi 32-based)
  • Radeon RX 7600 XT: (AMD Navi 33-based?)
  • Radeon RX 7500 XT: (AMD Navi 33-based?)

Right now, all we have is the above speculation which may be in accordance with what you can expect from the next generation of graphics cards from AMD. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but merely speculation on where each card will be based on, and what chip you can expect from it, too. These are likely to be slightly more powerful than the previous generation, meaning that you can expect more performance out of these chips than the previous generation, and hopefully with the release coming in at the tail end of 2022 when stock has somewhat stabilized a little bit.
