Ring in the Lunar New Year on February 1st, 2022, with a special themed event in Pokémon GO. During the event, specific species of Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild, and there are also bonuses based around Friendship and Stardust.
Lunar New Year 2022 Pokémon GO event
The Chinese New Year, or Lunar New Year, is celebrated on February 1st in 2022, and, to celebrate, Niantic is bringing back its annual Lunar New Year event to Pokémon GO. The event, as with other in-game celebrations, will feature specific species of Pokémon appearing in the wild, in raids and in research tasks. There will also be themed bonuses to make your Pokémon Training that little bit more thrilling for the event’s duration, and one Pokémon’s shiny variant will be appearing in Pokémon GO for the first time!
Event Bonuses
During the Lunar New Year Pokémon GO event, players will benefit from some bonuses based around friendship. The following four bonuses, all boosting trades and gift giving, will be available for an extended period between January 31st, 2022 and 1pm PST/4pm EST/9pm GMT and February 8th, 2022, at 1pm PST/4pm EST/9pm GMT.
- Increased chance of getting a Lucky Pokémon when trading
- Increased change to become Lucky Friends
- Twice the Stardust from opening gifts
- One additional special trade every day during the event
Wild Encounters
A new rotation of Pokémon will be appearing more frequently in the wild for the duration of the event. Just some of the Pokémon you can expect to see on your map are:
All of the above Pokémon, except Hisuian Voltorb and Combusken, could appear in their shiny form!
New Raid Bosses
A new roster of Raid Bosses will also be available for the duration of the Lunar New Year 2022 event. Take a look at our full guide to Current Raid Bosses for a comprehensive list of who’s appearing, but to give you an idea, you can expect to battle the likes of Darumaka, Druddigon and Mega Houndoom.
Event Pokémon hatching from eggs
Any 7km Eggs obtained during the event will feature the following Pokémon. Remember, the egg mechanic means that the Pokémon in your egg is decided when it is added to your bag, not when it is hatched. As such, an egg hatched during the event but received prior to the event might not contain one of these Pokémon. Equally, eggs obtained during Lunar New Year but hatched afterwards will hatch one of the following:
All of the above Pokémon, apart from Scraggy, could hatch in their shiny form!
Field Research Tasks
Special event-themed Research Tasks will also be available during the Lunar New Year event. While they’re not guaranteed, they are frequently available from spinning Pokéstops and Gyms. You will know an Event Research Task as it will be a different color and will show the word “event” on it. These specific tasks could result in an encounter with one of the following Pokémon:
All of the above Pokémon could appear in its shiny form!
Timed Research encounters
Finally, there is one last feature to this mammoth event. Well, make that two. You’ll see not one but two new Timed Research challenges to complete in order to earn encounters with Litleo and Espurr. These Research challenges will involve friendship and catching-related tasks.
When does the Pokémon GO Lunar New Year event 2022 end?
The Pokémon GO Lunar New Year event for 2022 will last from February 2st, 2022 at 10am local time, until February 7th, 2022, at 8pm local time. Don’t worry, though! When Lunar New Year ends, it will be just a few days until Pokémon GO’s Valentine’s Day event.
Can Litleo be shiny in Pokémon GO?
As of this new Lunar New Year event, yes, Litleo can now appear in Pokémon GO in its shiny form, and can even be evolved into shiny Pyroar. This is the first time shiny Litleo and Pyroar are available in Pokémon GO, so get out there and get hunting!
Can Espurr be shiny in Pokémon GO?
Espurr can also be shiny in Pokémon GO as of February 1st, 2022. Espurr can be encountered as part of the Lunar New Year event, but is also February’s Research Breakthrough Reward encounter.
