YouTube’s earning scheme has been broken down, analysed and for whatever reason, is still reported as an estimate. The fluctuations in earnings from views on the world’s leading video platform mean that it can be near impossible to ever get things down, especially as most YouTubers and personalities on the platform rarely are ever transparent about it.
While Mr Beast and one of the Paul brothers are the top earners overall via their video views alone and combined with any advertising deals, extracting those figures from what are effectively private companies is impossible to do. What we can do though, is look at Super Chats and see how much people are actually earning for YouTube, themselves and in the case of the top ten earners in 2021, what they’re making for the company they work for.

As you can see and if you go to the resources available, like Playboard.co, you’ll find that it is littered with what could be described as “random anime girls”. You wouldn’t be wrong, as these people belong to Hololive, an idol project owned by Cover Corp.
Hololive explained
Cover is predominately focused on their idol projects, but are currently using the Hololive brand to expand out into actual games via their Hololive Alternative, which aims to use the backstories these characters are introduced with and often dropped for the sake of entertainment as a base for the fiction they’ll be working on.
Hololive began in 2017 to a rocky start, effectively gaining popularity on luck alone as the sole member, virtual YouTuber Tokino Sora was streaming to single-digit audiences. When a more popular vtuber had technical issues, she sent her audience to Sora and inadvertently sparked one of the biggest phenomenons to grace the internet recently.
Pokimane, currently involved with Ninja in a potential lawsuit feud, began and then dropped being one in the face of backlash as she had already built up an audience as herself.
Now Hololive consistently dominates the charts in subscriber bases, with their most popular being newer entry to the lineup, Gwar Gura of the Hololive English brand nearly reaching 4 million subscribers in just over a year. She streams a variety of games, with a deep love of rhythm games, which she’s now downloadable content for Groove Coaster on Switch.
Hololive is currently split in several groups, including a dedicated male idol group called HoloStars. The women in Japan are currently up to Hololive Generation 6, dubbed HoloX, which is the 8th group. The others are Gen 0, 1, 2, GAMERS, Fantasy (3), holoForce (4), holoFive/NePoLaBo (5), as well as two generations of Hololive Indonesia (ID) and English – Myth and Council – which also encompasses Project: Hope, a music-focused outfit.
Hololive China was dissolved after now-retired member, Kiryu Coco, mentioned Taiwan in a stream when finding out which users were watching her stream. She was suspended for a while, with harassment by Chinese users being to the scale that Hololive pulled out of the region altogether.
Hololive saw a massive boom in the west during the pandemic, as YouTube rabbit holes all lead us to this singular point, with a vast quantity of independents now flocking to Twitch and YouTube for streaming.
What is YouTube’s cut of Super Chats?
YouTube takes around 30% of all Super Chat earnings, with the rest going directly into the YouTuber’s account. In the case of Hololive, Cover also takes 35% to pay salaries of the members of their various teams, as well as managers and producers. The rest then goes to the women behind the anime.
So in the case of someone like Rushia, still leaves her leaving someone like massive earner Dr. Disrespect far behind, as she still takes home $590,572.20~.
However, retired user Kiryu Coco, now streaming under her previous alias KSon, pulled in $1,489,485 under Coco despite leaving the company partway into the year. She is currently also 30 worldwide as KSon, earning just under 500K, without the overhead of losing an estimated 35% from Hololive. Her video from today’s time of writing (19/01/22) earned her $5.8K before cuts.
