Took advantage of the Black Friday deal on this for $350 to replace my Sony X800M2, which recently stopped working after only a few years of very light use (of course outside of warranty). Did a lot of research before buying the Sony and it seemed like the right balance of cost and performance, but I was actually somewhat annoyed and disappointed with several aspects of it, even before it bricked for no apparent reason. The menu was bare bones and ugly, the whole user experience felt cheap, and the lack of automatic Dolby Vision detection was super annoying (having to check to see if the disc you’re playing has dolby vision, then going through the menu on the player to manually turn it on or off for every movie you want to watch). The UB820 is a far better experience on all fronts. When first hooking it up and powering on, it runs an initial easy setup that detects your TV and properly optimizes everything (something the Sony doesn’t do). The menu is clean and looks a lot nicer. And hallelujah – automatic HDR modes. It’s just painless and works like you would expect a blu ray player at this price point to work. Of course the picture and sound quality are fantastic. Time will tell how it holds up, but based upon initial impressions I would highly recommend this over the X800M2.

This was not an issue for me as I had an HDMI cable just wanted any future purchasers to know this.Picture quality is fantastic, upscaler(I believe it’s auto by default) is amazing and works really well especially on dvd’s and blu ray’s. It’s color processor works wonders which is why I’m giving Picture quality 5 stars. User interface is good but could use some work, it’s simple enough but some network features might be lacking to standard. Remote control is simple, easy to readOver all I’d rate this product 5 stars and I rarely leave ratings. Please read the instruction booklet!

Purchased on sale for about $425. Upgraded from an LG UBK80. I did the good ‘ol Pepsi challenge with scenes from several movies, and it was immediately noticeable that the Panasonic has smoother motion, greater detail, and surprisingly better sound. The available image options/settings are more numerous than I was expecting, which is nice. It is connected to an Epson LS11000 on a 135″ screen and a Denon X3700H.

I bought this to replace a 6-year old Samsung 4K player which was rated one of the best at the time. The Samsung started getting a little flaky so I figured now was a good time to replace it. If Samsung still made 4k players, I’d have stuck with them but alas they do not.In short, the Panasonic delivers far superior video and audio than the 6-year old Samsung and it was worth the cost.BUT! an IR (infrared remote) with limited cross-brand compatibility vs an RF (radio frequency) remote in 2024 is very disappointing,.

After much searching, I settled on this item as it was the younger brother of the much, much more expensive version. So, far, I’m impressed overall, Sleep timer is super annoying, as it shuts off the unit, versus putting it into sleep mode. Because of that, I have to restart the unit, and fast forward (#5) the disc until I can see where I left off. Go to Settings–Display–and turn off the timer. The remote is quite easy to use, although I wish it was backlighted. Overall, it appears to be a good purchasde. We shall see just how long it lasts…….

Worth the cost over cheaper alternatives. This one also beats the Sony in the same price point. Limited “smart” features, but nobody should be buying this for anything other than physical media. My partner was annoyed at me for buying this.. 20 minutes into watching Oppenheimer on 4k UHD, she turned to me and said “I get it now.” Anyone who thinks streaming is “good enough” doesn’t know what they’re missing.Keep physical media alive!

Received this today — set up took less than 5 minutes & the picture and sound are superb !!! Although I did not get this on sale & paid full price, it is worth EVERY PENNY. Because I watch DVD’s all the time, I wanted a Blu-Ray/DVD player that would give me the best viewing experience. This player delivers, & I am so glad I bought it. Gonna go watch some movies “till my eyes fall out” (hahaha).

Although expensive, if you can snag this for a discount (which it usually is available for) it is a no-brainer. I use this in my home theater and the ability to auto-detect my 5.2.4 sound system and automatically detect HDR/Dolby Vision is very nice. Not to mention it will play my extended Lord of the Rings 4K discs without freezing, jittering, or errors. It is a very nice piece of quality equipment that has stood the test of time. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Went through both the Sony UBP X700 and the UBP X800M2 before moving to this deck. Both Sony’s are/were plagued with a playback freezing issue that unfortunately has no resolution, despite trying to work through for a couple of years.Researched the best alternative options and it’s either this deck or it’s pricier sibling (the 9000) that adds some legacy audiophile features (visual tech is identical between the 2 models).Set up was easy but some users might want to get in there to tweak a few preferences (I wanted to disable the deck’s video overlays showing the mode it was playing in at the start of a disc, etc as it sometimes was still present over beginning titles). Depending on your audio setup (if you are running through a receiver, etc.) you may also want to double check those settings. Believe the default for BD Secondary Audio is set to auto but most users with newer equipment will want this set to off.Have tested with several discs (both end to end playback and selected timestamps that gave my other players troubles) and very happy so far with the results. Picture is outstanding. The remote is a little chintzy but it does the job. If you are serious about your Home Ent. set up this is your best option. Drives on game consoles are not designed with this quality in mind and few manufacturers are seriously supporting the format with new products. My opinion: Get one while you can and especially if you see it discounted.
