Since I couldn’t find everything I wanted in one shredder at a good price I will do a pro ad con for this item.Paper feedersPro:I love the stack feeder inside. I had to shred paper work that was saved all the way from the 1950’s till now and I knew there would be a lot of “stacks” of tax returns and other items so I really liked the inside feeder that easily handled large stacks.Con: Not a big deal at all but if a paper was short (not standard size) the machine would stop so I could take it out and shred after. This was not a big deal but I spent some time for the most part going through stacks to make sure they were all the same standard size. Since there was a lot all one size, it was worth it.Auto shredder vs. auto shredderPro: The paper feeder on the top is really easy to feed. I only had a couple misfeeds with some curved paper that slipped between the shredder and the lid but they were easy to pull out.Con: I can’t really say it is a “con” as I knew when I bought it it did not have an auto feeder on the top. I knew it but still wish it had one for all the other sized papers. If you don’t shred a lot of standard size one with auto feeder might be better but if you only shred random, it is a strong shredder and I feel was worth the trade off.MovingPro: Easy rolling from location to location. This was great because it is a pretty large shredder and with the wheels you can easily just stash away and bring it out when you need it. My old shredder was small but heavy and I had to leave out because moving it was just a pain.Con: No real “con” her other than it is big, but that is not a bad thing.Sound:Pro: Really quiet for a shredder. I have only had one other shredder for the last 10 years but it always seemed super loud to me. I hated it. This one I sat in the living room with my husband watching TV and just shred away without really a bother.Con: I don’t see a con to this.Catch TubPro: Large catch basin for the shredding. Not only was it large but easy to pull it out to empty it. Light weight so easy to carry all the way out front to big trash can so not to use up trash bags. Also the shredding is cut very small. I couldn’t help playing with it a little it cut it so small.Con: When you pull out the catch basin, it tends to not tell you until it is pretty full. When you open it, the paper will spill some of the shred to the base inside that holds the catch bucket. Not much falls out at one time but you figure if you pull it, move paper up and put back in before dumping, each time a little paper falls to the back and then you have to scoop it up. After a few times of emptying the buck I had to vacuum it out so the tub would roll back in easy. I am not going to say this was a big deal. I don’t think on average I will be doing hours of shredding so really you don’t have to do this often but with a lot of shredding I would have vacuum ready.I would say 100% if you shred stacks of paper, this is great.I will be happy to have it even with out using the auto feeder all the time because the bucket is huge and it moves so easy and is so easy to empty.I really really like it.

Fantastic shredder! This replaced a 15+ year old Royal brand shredder that finally wore out.Well first off, my old Royal was advertised at the time as “cross cut” and it shredded into confetti. Flat little 1/4″ by 1/4″ squares, way too small to read any printing on. As I recall the shredder was not all that expensive back then either, probably $110 on sale at the time. So I go to my local warehouse club and buy another Royal “cross cut” shredder. I even get the $99 top-end one, not the other $49 Royal. And what do I find? Inch long strips!!! In what universe does that count as “shredded”? I can clearly read text on those strips. Long enough to view part of a bank number, or a credit card CCV code, you name it.I read up on this and discover that these days inch long strips are what you get with a “cross cut”. They have now invented a new word, “micro cut”, for actual shredding. Go figure. Plus now it seems that most shredders are designed to at least shred credit cards and the better ones like this to shred CDs. Maybe the old Royal could have shredded credit cards. Never even occured to me to try since that just really sounded like something that shouldn’t go through a shredder. So I start reseaching “micro cut” shredders and reading the comments. Lol, from the comments it sounds like the vast majority are junk. Break easily, only do a fraction of the rated pages, arrive broken, etc. As confirmation of that I at one point had decided on a $200-or-so micro cut from one of the office supply big box stores. But comments said it rather quickly breaks down and leaves big long strips rather than micro cuts. I go to my local store to have a look, and what do I find in the bin of the one on display, along with the handful of micro cut paper? a dozen big long strips. Geezzzz. New right out of the box and already the thing is broken. While reseaching the micro cut shredders I found this line of AmazonBasics units. Reading through the comments for the various shredder sizes the number of reported problems seemed to drop the bigger (more expensive and rated at more pages) the shredder gets. At the 17 rated pages here the comments seemed largely positive, with the few negatives sounding like outliers. I knew from all the comment about various shredders I’ve read so far that you really should divide the rated sheet capacity on ANY shredder by 2 to remove the marketing spin. 17 sheets here should be 8 and 8 sheets does sound like about the stiffness of a credit card. If one were to be especially brave and use a 2/3 metric that woudl be 0.67 * 17 = 11 sheets, which should be about the stiffness of a CD. So I’m thinking maybe, just maybe, this shredder would do what it says it does.I ordered it and right off the bat discovered something. See those selections on the right for optional 2 or 3 year extended warranty? You can’t go back and buy those after you buy the shredder. I didn’t want to buy them until I knew if the thing worked. It does, so I called Amazon and can’t buy the extended retroactively. I could probably return it for free to Amazon then re-buy it with the warranty, but no I’m not going to do that.Next up is the packaging. Good job, Amazon. The manufacturer in China properly put the shredder’s box in an outer shipping box and let that get beat up in transit, not the shredder’s box. If It had arrived without an outer shipping box, just the shredder box with a label stuck on it, I wouldn’t have been a happy camper. The outer box is just barely bigger than the shredder’s box, large enough for two cats to play in at once (tested). Old TV repairman’s trick here for dealing with large heavy things in boxes. Don’t take the shredder out of the box, take the box off the shredder. Open the box lid and turn it upside down (the top has protective foam around the top of the shredder), then pull the box off the shredder. Then flip it back around. The shredder comes with the wheels installed. As for the shredder, IT WORKS!! Just as described. The shredded paper is tiny confetti like the old Royal, although it is bent 60 deegrees in the middle. All the micro-cut shredders seem to do that now for some reason. The old Royal left the pieces flat. And yes it does shred credit cards and does it wonderfully. As luck would have it I received a new card in the mail a week after getting the shredder and ran the old card through. Didn’t slow the motor a bit, just like shredding a few papers. Couldn’t even really tell the plastic shreds from the paper. I had to rub a few pieces between my fingers to feel some plastic shreds from the card. I haven’t tried shredding a CD yet. I’ll have to work up to the throught of inserting a CD in a paper shredder.I’m going to compare this shredder to the $99 Royal from a warehouse club:* No lid to move or open!! Just turn it on and stick the paper in the slot. Yeah!! The design philosophy seems to be that i’m going to be smart enough not to stick my fingers deep into a paper shredder. Good assumption. Like one or two comments noted the paper has to go in the slot 3 or 4 inches to start the motor, but hey my old Royal did that too. There is your security feature.* No separate slot for credit cards and CDs, just a marked section in the middle of the one slot. Excellent. The warehouse club shredder had two slots very close to each other than I couldn’t even see in the dimly lit room where the shredder lives.* Quiet! My old Royal used to be quiet, but 15 years later it could probably wake the neighbors a house away. This one didn’t even wake the cat sleeping nearby.* The auto-shutoff works well. The auto shutofff in my old Royal used to be the same way, the shredder would shut down after 15 seconds or so with no paper in the slot, But that eventually died too on the Royal, a couple of years ago. I’ve just been turning it on and off as needed. Great to have one with the auto-shutoff working again.* I see comments about small pieces of paper not auto-starting the shredder. Pro Tip: the sensor is right in the middle of the slot. In the manual they even have a picture of where it is located in case it needs cleaning. If you are shreeding something skinny, small, whatever, feed it in right in the middle of ths slot. My old Royal was exactly the same way.* The bin pulls out in front. I’ve seen a picture of a certain shredder with the bin pulling out to the side. What was that manufactuer smoking. Shredders go into tight spaces under desks. Where there is no space on the sides. And a few nuggets of wisdom from the instructions, once i finally had some time to read them:* IT IS DESIGNED FOR SHREDDER BAGS!! I almost didn’t buy it because of this seeming omission. My old Royal didn’t have shredder bags and micro-cuts, as they call them now, can create quite a mess when some of them stick to the sides of the bin (static electricity I guess). Not a word in the Amazon description about shredder bags, but there it is on page 9 of the manual. There is a hook molded into the top front of the bin on each side to hook the bag, then the back of the bin has a special shapped slot to stuff any bag excess. They have a picture that makes it all clear. The big box office supply store where I looked at shredders has shredder bags.* It should be oiled monthly. In fact on page 8 it discusses oiling and even states failure to do so will void the warranty. Another omission from the Amanzon description. It seems like just common sense the blades in any shredder will last longer and stay rust-free with occasional oil. I oiled my 15 year old Royal about once a month. The big box office supply stores have official “shredder oil” in a bottle, which is what the instructions on this unit say or use, or cooking oil (don’t do it! It will gum up I’ll betcha. Use the correct stuff). The same big box office store that had the shredder bags also has a package of pre-oiled sheets you can run through shredders. The simple and easy way. If using the oil in a bottle the instructions say to run a bead right across the paper input slot, then put it in reverse for 3 seconds.* It has the typical door open / overheat / overload / power-on LEDs* Shuts itself off after 5 minutes as an “Energy Saving Auto Power-off”. Lol, anytime you see the words “energy saving” or “ECO” on something you will find that is usually the poor performance mode that the device was never really designed for, but it sounds good for marketing spin. Run away. In this specific case though it is probably a good thing. So you do have to hit that big “on” button at the start of each shredding session. This answers the question you will have of “Didn’t I leave it on last time? Why is it off now?”* Auto-reverse. If you stuff so much in that the “overload” light comes on it auto-reverses to spit it out. Probably a good thing. Why did you stuff that much paper in anyway?* Truth in advertising on page 4: “One folded sheet of paper equates to 2 sheets of paper. Heavier paper, humidity or other than rated wall socket voltage may reduce shredding capacity”. Just plain old common sense stuff. Like “coffee is hot” or “knives are sharp”.* A little yellow piece of paper inserted in the manual says “As part of AmazonBasics quality inspections, we test every shredder before shippiing it. Because of this, you may see paper shreds in the bin from the testing”. Well if this is true, good work Amazon! Reading through the comments for the various shredder models and types it sounds like the out-of-the-box failure rate is over 20%, either immediately or within a few hours/days. With a failure rate like that I would say it is absolutely necessary to test shredders at the factory. Ever buy aftermarket car parts? My experience has been over 50% DOA brand new, right out of the box, and they will only last a year if you are lucky. That is why it is worth going to the dealer and paying 4x. It will work 95% of the time right out of the box so you don’t have to spend another day uninstalling/reinstalling and you might get the same 5 years out of it you did with the original part.I’m writing this review just a couple of weeks after receiving the shredder, due to being really happy with it. I have no idea how long term reliability will be. I expect it to be awful, quite frankly, but I’m so happy at that point just to find one that shreds properly I guess I don’t even mind if I have to re-purchase it in a year. Which goes back to that extended warranty I can’t buy anymore. See if Amazon will refund those warranties (they tell me it is some outside company) if you return the shredder. If so its a no-brainer. Sign up for the 3 year extended warranty, then if you don’t like the shredder return it and the warranty. The 17 sheet here is definitely the one to get. If you are looking at smaller Amazon Basics shredders do yourself a big favor and get this one. You know as well as I do that “6 sheet shredder” of just about any brand is probably going to load down after 3 sheets because the motor belongs in a pencil sharpener. Why do that to yourself. Life is too short. Buy this shredder that as some muscle and be happy.

This is a heavy duty professional product that works extremely well. I have had a few lighter duty shredders before and this product is far superior. It is physically heavy but is on rollers so it is quite maneuverable once it is on the ground. The see-through front is helpful for determining how much paper is in the bin. The paper does tend to bunch up in the back, causing a bit of a premature bin full signal, although a quick redistribution resolves the issue. I’ve only have to do this once or twice a load. The auto-feed feature is wonderful as I can put multiple regular-size sheets (8.5 x 11), push a button, and shredding occurs automatically, one page at a time. It is quite a time-saver. Also, it shreds into small pieces, if HIPAA compliance/security is a consideration (we’ve probably all seen movies where a crew of people are piecing together shredded paper) – I don’t think that would be very likely with this unit). I love the fact that I do not have to remove a clunky mechanism from a top-heavy shredder to remove the shreds. The shredder-holder bin just slides out. I have only had this unit for three months, and I’ll let you know if there are any problems with it in the future. So far so good.

I recently was tasked with processing a large amount of paperwork and files after settling a loved ones passing. my old shredder would overheat after 5 min. so I bought this one. it munched credit cards, loyalty cards, small pamphlets, quarterly report packages. I was able to feed it up to 16 sheets of normal copy paper at a time. (it did slow down on those, but still worked). envelopes with folded 3 sheet letters no problem. in the end, I shredded 3 full 30 Gal trash bags in one afternoon. I oiled it every 10 min or so. it just never stopped munching. I tried 17 sheets, it stopped. I just reversed it, fed it 10 sheets and on it went. I still drop card, and junk mail credit offers in it daily. good small secure sized shreds. and it’s not super loud. my old one sounds like a table saw. this one just sounds no louder than my dishwasher. good value. good product. if you need a shredder that works without worry. this is one.

Needed a new shredder, so I came on Amazon and browsed around the site looking at all the shredders. As I oohed and aahed at the shredder I saw. The AmazonBasics 17-Sheet High-Security Micro-Cut Paper, CD, and Credit Card Shredder caught my eye. Reading about the details of this shredder sounded amazing. Continuous running time 20 minutes, 7 gallons bin, it has wheels, heavy duty, micro-cut, etc. I never had a micro-cut shredder, since I needed a new shredder I would get myself one. Got lots of paper that needs extra security when trashing. Also this will help when recycling paper if one has that program in their area.Pros:Low sound (not annoying, not disruptive to others, One can be on the phone when using the shredder.)Shreds fast.Continuous running time 20 mins (great for people who needs to shred lots of paper at one time)Micro-cut – Security level P-4Up to 17 sheets at onceCredit Card and CD shredding.Pull out bin holds 7 gallons.Cons:Doesn’t roll very well on carpet, one has to carry it, might tip over if one does try to wheel it on carpet (wheels are somewhat small).Somewhat messy (depends on the person who uses it. Bags are good to use, make sure to have a vacuum, small broom brush, broom and dust pan near.)50 mins cool down. The bin holds the bag in place so it don’t get pulled into the shredder. There is a slot to hold the bag and slits to keep the bag down and in place. I would suggest using a bag, Be nice if there was a paper bag that fits into this bin so it could be reused and over again. As one can dump the contents into another bag easier. Maybe Amazon will think of a paper bag refill or sell bags that are environmentally friendly. This shredder doesn’t struggle with shredding. The most I put in was 10 sheets. It sounded the same and still had power as if I did one sheet of paper. Not like my old shredder that sounded horrible and felt like it was about to conk out on me if I did 5 sheets at once. The shredder can shred small paper clips and staples. I haven’t tried it. I won’t try it. It says it can but it also will wear down the machine faster. I don’t want to ruin the shredder so I will be avoiding metal and CD’s. Not sure if I want to shred a CD, it sounds fun but it scares me. I don’t to break this shredder. The struggles of being an adult, LOL!The shredder makes low noise that’s comfortable when others are in the room. One can be on a phone or have a conversation in the room with people without the shredder being loud. The shredder is not rude disruptive like. My old shredder was so loud that it was annoying and could not hear the other person talk or be on the phone.Over all I like this shredder. I can put it next to my desk and not bend over in my chair. I can sit comfortably in my chair as I shred one paper or a box full. I like that I can shred important papers without worrying someone will find my info. This shredder cuts and makes the little pieces soft. I like putting my hands in it. It’s somewhat enjoyable playing with the shredded paper. I know it sounds weird but it’s fun.I would recommend this shredder to my friends and to anyone who is looking for a micro-cut shredder.(Update Sept 2016, Still going strong. No problems so far.)

It’s a bit early to tell, but so far so good. I shred A LOT. I had a shredder 3x the size of this one for over 20 years that to my horror finally died. To replace it would have cost me a minimum of $400. I figured after 20 years shredders should be new and improved. I have been happy with Amazon basic products and thought I would try the shredder. It does a good job. It’s a bit slow when shredding 6 to 8 pages but is shreds just fine. It’s a bit noisy as well. No surprise I have to empty it more frequent than my past shredder, but it is way easier to empty and a lot less mess. It maneuvers around out hardwood floor easily as well. So far, I would buy it again.

I ordered another brand that had excellent reviews but broke after only a few cardboard shreadings and it wasn’t heavy cardbard. I returned that one (I’m going to assume I just got a bad one but wasn’t taking a chance) and talked to a worm farmer on Youtube to find what he was using and he recommended this Amazon Basics brand. The original was 15 sheet so I was a bit nervouse about buying this 12 sheet model but when he mentioned using it to even shread Amazon corrugated cardboard at times, i/ figured /i’d take a chance since I was doing less than that. This one has been great and is even much quieter than the returned one. Can’t say much about the wheels as I haven’t used them and it sits on the floor in the kitchen where It gets most of its usage, shreading the cardboard my meals come in from the food service (not the shipping box which is heavy corrugated) and things like cereal boxes. Once in a while I even put some paper through it.

Before I got this shredder, my old ones (I’ve had about 3 over the past umpteen years) use to sit in a corner and the stuff I wanted to shred piled up on top of it. I’d pull it out of the corner to plug in about twice a year. Dumping the shred into a bag made a huge mess. Now with this fabulous shredder, it sits under my desk and I can conveniently roll it out every time I need to shred something. The best part is that I can put a bag into the bin, which makes clean up a breeze. I do not know why the instructions said not to leave it plugged in. I’m guessing it’s one of those safety issues cuz some numbskull stuck his finger into it or something. I’m not a numbskull so I leave it plugged in. The window in the bin makes it easy to see when it’s time to pull it out to empty. Taking the working mechanism (cutter & motor) off is a bit heavy, but I don’t have to do it often so it’s not a big deal. I am very pleased with my purchase.

Our other paper shredder we had for ten years and we thought it was the best shredder made until we got this shredder. It is so much quieter and can take multiple sheets of paper all at once cutting down on the time it takes to shred documents. The basket inside that stores the shredded paper is so handy to get out and dump unlike our old shredder where you had to lift the motor off the basket just to dump it getting those small pieces of paper everywhere, then you would need to vacuum every time

I’ve owned 2 shredders in the past, either it heated up too quick and had jamming problems. This shredder exceeded my expectations, I used it continuously for 1 1/2 hours with no over heating or jamming and filled 2 garbage bags.I also like the fact that it’s also equipped with icons that would light up if there is a problem while you’re printing. I Highly recommend this shredder!
