Easy to set up and use. One has to get creative in placing the unit. I my State, cops don’t like the idea your “blocking” your front window with your GPS! The unit is small enough to place almost anywhere below the dashboard. In my sports car I have it mounted to the console in my Jeep it fits between my instruments. No matter where I put it, it still gets a signal. I can hear it most anywhere. I like it can give you one or more “alternate routes” Great for the unexpected construction or maybe you just want to take the “scenic” route. Warns you of camera intersection and speed limits heavily enforced. An excellent unit and almost a necessity if you aren’t sure of where you are going!

Garmin Drive 50 USA LM I bought this GPS unit as a backup for google maps on my Nexus 5 for a cross country trip from IL to CA. Surprisingly by the end of the trip, I found myself using the Garmin about 99% of the time. I am comparing this unit against google maps that I use 99% of the time otherwise. The reasons I like this better than google maps:1. The split screen was really informative – especially with large lane guidance in unfamiliar areas and upcoming stops displayed next to the map without having to navigate away from the live map. This may not be a problem with long stretches of roads but in a city for example, the ability to show important stops like gas, food and rest stops without having to risk going away from the map and losing a turn.2. The “Up next” info was probably the most useful feature for me as the three most important things during a long trip Viz. Food, Fuel and rest areas are very conveniently shown next to the map. This allowed me to get fuel at the upcoming gas station if the next one after that (whose distance was also shown as part of what’s up next information) was going to be 100 miles away. This saved my from running out of fuel a couple of times in the middle of the AZ/NM/NV area.3. The current speed limit was very helpful and I found it was about 100 yards off from the signs posted (i.e. the GPS took about 100 yards to catch up with the posted speed limit signs). This is better than google maps which does not have any such information at all.4. Offline navigation! This in itself was the main reason I brought a dedicated GPS unit and I was not disappointed! I shudder to think of not having navigation in the middle of Arizona/Utah because of lack of phone coverage. After using a dedicated GPS (while coming from a position of skepticism of it’s usefulness over google maps), I will say that I probably will be using this GPS for all my long distance driving over using my phone (and leave my phone always connected to the charger). But for inner city navigation, I still prefer google maps/waze for almost instantaneous traffic based navigation.

We purchased this Garmin GPS to replace a much older unit which could no longer be updated to navigate west of the Mississippi River due to older electronics and low data storage. I first ordered a large screen (import brand) GPS and checked it’s accuracy here in town, and again in a nearby community. That GPS unit was not accurate, it’s navigation was confusing and I definitely did not care for it’s navigational voice commands. I wouldn’t trust it for one minute to help us get through a congested and unfamiliar, 65-70mph metro area. I did not like it at all! I then purchased this Garmin Drive 50 LM GPS and checked it’s navigational accuracy and found it to be VERY accurate. We used it on our latest trip…my wife and I loved it! It is not only very accurate, but it kept me fully informed, in a timely manner, which lane to occupy way ahead of our exits, and the voice commands were clear and easy to understand. Let me add one more criteria; the voice. The voice used in this Garmin is sorta soothing…when keeping up with congested traffic at 65mph in an unfamiliar metro area, you, as the driver are watching everything going on around you. Depending on how heavy the traffic is, and how crazy the other drivers are, you do NOT want a hard, jolting voice command startling your concentration! I enjoyed hearing a pleasant toned voice helping me with directions. I rate our new Garmin at 5 stars!

I’m an EMT so I’m usually the drivee when we take a patient to the hospital emergently. I would try to use my phone before I got this handy device but it would spaz out sometimes and either keep recalculating or just freeze entirely. I’ve used this GPS for a while now. I dong have to look down at my phone, you can turn the sound off so no one knows you don’t fully know you’re way around, and it doesn’t spaz out. It immediately knows where to take you. I am very happy with this device and I take it with me and set it up everytime I’m on the truck. 9/10 would recommend (-1 star because it took me a few hours to download everything the first day I got it and the battery life is awful).

I love everything about this GPS except one thing. It is not as brightly clear as my old one. It is just slightly muted. It is very readable but very slightly faded compared to the older model. Other than that, I find it very easy to use and it is very accurate and up to date. I like that you can control the volume on the home screen and when you get to an intersection on the highway, it shows you a split screen with a picture of the turnoff. You don’t have to change the state any more because there is a step that makes it easy to either choose or tell it what state you’re looking for. No one says recalculating any more but it signals at the top that it is recalculating by displaying the percentage of direction has been caclcuated so far. That’s how you know you’ve made a mistake. It’s more sophisticated in looking for nearby businesses, gas stations, restaurants etc. I love it. I’m looking forward to being able to update it using an ordinary USB cord. My old one had no way to do this. So take to the highway and enjoy!

My husband suffered a stroke three weeks ago. This forced me to have to drive to strange cities in order to get him to his appointments with various doctors and specialists. I never had a good sense of direction, which is why I never drove much. I always depended on my husband to take me places. When the stroke hit, this forced me to be the driver. This GPS device is a life saver for me. I don’t know what I would do without it. Now, if I hear that my husband has to go to such and such a place, I am no longer afraid to drive him because the GPS device will tell me exactly where to go. I was always afraid to drive because of my lousy sense of direction. If there was a detour in the road, I would panic. This device took the fear away from me completely and has liberated me from my self-imposed prison. Not only this, but I am able to get my husband to the places he needs to go. I will never be without this device ever again.

Would be really helpful if someone make it known that the device has to be FULLY charged before anything can be done with it. It arrived with a screen protector saying “This product is ready to use” but until it is charged, it isn’t. I had previously downloaded the Manual and that does not warn about the need to be fully charged. Very inadequate user instructions.12-23-17 update. I’ve used this for a month and am very happy with it. The voice is loud and clear and the driving directions adjust to my alterations to the recommended route. When it realizes I’m not taking the recommended turns it automatically corrects and gives me new directions based on where I am. The screen image is clear and crisp and easy to see mounted on the dash. Highly recommend the Portable Friction Mount to secure it to the dash. It took me a while to discover that I could remove the camera from the Mount without having to pull it off the little ball…there is a release on the back of the device that allows for removal of the device leaving the connector attached to the ball.

We just used this for a trip from upstate NY to the Bristol Renaissance Faire, in WI. Screen size is good, directions were good. Definitely like how it helps you out by indicating which of several lanes you want to be in. On the way to our hotel, there was a “jog” we needed to make off the exit ramp, which had 3 or 4 lanes, and it indicated which lane to be in to be in the right lane for the next turn. It’s just a bit confusing to get it to search in the right city occasionally. By default, it often searches in your current location, and it’s not always clear where you can or can’t enter the city/state you want, which is why it only gets 4 stars for the User Interface. However, I do like being able to navigate by scrolling to a place, touching the screen, and saying, “Go.”

Used it one time so far on a 3.5 hour trip to Orlando, Florida. The screen is a good size to see where you need to go without being too distracted of where you’re driving. Was accurate with the speed limits and tolls no matter where we went. I bought this one because of the lifetime maps feature. In Florida the growth is always changing the roadways so it is comforting to know how to get somewhere even if the last time I went was three-four years ago. Was also pretty good at showing local amenities based on my location. Helpful when you’re in a place like Orlando. The only thing I found annoying was the GPS seemed pretty stubborn on the different routes it calculated. I specifically wanted to limit my time on I4 & I75 and it took some extra effort to customize the route I wanted. Otherwise I still really glad I have this GPS when I go on road trips.
