Though maybe not the highest quality or fullest-featured transparency scanner, this product is GREAT for quickly and easily reviewing and scanning old family slides and negatives. The native 13MP image sensor is fine for the amateur family slides and snapshots from old cameras, in my opinion. 35mm negatives and slides produce 4320 x 2880 pixel image files, which seem to be about as clear as I would expect the old film to produce, if the original photo was sharp and clear (largely a function of the camera quality).Reviewing and scanning color negatives is especially nice, as it is very difficult to post-process color negatives in software – you can’t just “invert” a color negative accurately with most photo editing software. With this viewer, you can just select “Color Negative” and view (and scan) your negative strips as if they were positive slides! Very handy and useful, something you can’t do with just a light box and a magnifying glass.I also really appreciate the auto-exposure feature. It automatically compensates for over- and under-exposure in the slide or negative, making it quick and easy to correct and scan amateur shots. It seems to do quite well with compensating for a wide range of over- and under-exposed shots. The color correction feature, if needed, also seems to do a decent job with some fiddling – sometimes saving the extra step of post-processing some color corrections in photo editing software.I do wish they had a mode for over-scanning some slides and negatives, to reduce the auto-cropping of slides and negative frames. As other reviews have described, the scanner crops the images a little from what is usually available on the film. This is handy for most images, since it cleans up the edges by cropping off the “fuzzy” edges and rounded corners on slides and some negatives – but sometimes you need to capture the very edges of amateur shots for some critical details. With this scanner, you sometimes need to make small sacrifices over what might have been possible if you could scan more of each film frame, and do your own edge clean-up when needed. The only other issue I had was with some old non-35mm square negatives (127 format film, 40mm x 40mm image sizes). I WAS able to scan most of these negatives in a 35mm form by NOT using a film adapter (just the slide carrier), and selectively cropping a fair amount from the top and bottom, and a little from the sides. But it would be nice to be able to better handle more of the 40mm square negatives that seemed to be popular in the 50s and 60s or later. And REALLY, Kodak – not allowing the date to be set earlier than 1980?? Come on! Those old negatives and slides from our parents and grand-parents are still relevant today! My photo editing software allows the date and time “Taken” on digital images to be changed (EXIF “DateTimeOriginal”), but apparently the scanned date (EXIF “DateTimeDigitized”) from the Kodak scanner is still retained in the image meta data. This causes issues with some handling in my photo organization software (Photoshop Elements Organizer).Overall, I am very satisfied with this scanner for my main purpose of easily viewing and digitizing old slides and negatives!

So many of these devices are linear scanners, i.e. a row of CCDs move across a media to create an image line by line. This device is a self-contained camera with fixed focal length to a hi-res 1/3rd inch CCD. The 11 Mpx image is interpolated to 22Mpx then saved to an SD card – which is the slowest part of the process. You can snap slides/negatives at about 5 seconds each. SO MUCH faster than line scanners which can take up to 5 minutes each. Image quality is excellent, just keep the platen clean with the enclosed tool – old slides tend to be dusty. The parts I don’t like is the fixed image size which, as noted by others, tends to crop images a little tight. However, you can maneuver the film to catch the important subject matter. The controls are NOT touch screen, you have to push a button on the top of the device. Somewhat dis-orienting for us touch screen addicted swippers. There is very little to any image correction. You can adjust brightness, tone and contrast, but even on the seemingly large 7″ (diag) screen is cumbersome to do, especially with the buttons. Best to scan, off load and use more specialized software.Of all devices researched and tested, this is by far the best for the money.

I spent my entire career working in a camera store and always had access to the latest equipment. That also meant I took a lot of photographs. In the late 70s and early early 80s I was mostly using slides. Throughout the years I back burned them as digital came along. This Christmas I decided to scan the slides so I can hand them over to my daughters. 10 years ago a slide scanner was absolutely out of reach for average consumers when it came to the cost. They were bulky, very finicky, and the took forever to scan each slide. This scanner takes less than five seconds to scan each one. It also does negative films if you no loner thave the origianl photo. Scanning to a jpeg file makes it very easy to file permanently in a cloud, and also to upload to a photo printing service.I’m extremely impressed with the ability of the unit to do auto color and light corrections. If it doesn’t do as well, as you hoped, you can manually go in also and adjust brightness, color and contrast. The images is shown in my review are from 1978. The originals didn’t look nearly as vibrant as the ones that came out in the scanner. The only thing I don’t like is, although the slides load easily, and are for the most part automatic, (although manual), I do not like the way the loader is in the back. The screen is large, which is wonderful, but you have to look around the back to get each slide in. When scanning thousands of slides, that can really take a toll on your back as you reach around to get into the backside of the loader. I suppose, if I would’ve turned it sideways that would help. But I wanted to see the images front to check or adjust any color or light issues. Also to be sure that they were fully in the scanner area. For the cost, I don’t think you can do better. It’s just too simple to use and very versatile. I would recommend as a great gift for your family photographer to get the old slides and negatives into the cloud onr on a SD card. Or if you’re the photographer, you will be pleasntly surprised at the quality and want to put thi on you wish list.

Easy to use. I was able to transfer all my negative film from way back in the early 80’s to digital. It brings back memories and fun to see all the old forgotten pictures of the kids and family. Great product.

Pros: easy to use, save to computer, or SD, colors are great, reads color negatives good tooCons: The tray to insert slides could be another 2 inches longer, no big deal, but would be easier to insert slidesOther than that, I like it alot

Bought the scanner in June and tested it on a few slides, seemed to work okay so put it away until I had time to scan my slides. Finally found the time in November, now the scanner will not turn on. Home Screen will come on and immediately turn off. Long passed time to return, now have to deal with Kodax support. Have seen several reviews having the same problem. My advice is to use it before you lose it.(Update)I originally tested it on an old laptop that has since been replaced. It did not work on the new laptop, but when I finally tried it on my old desktop computer, it worked. So must be something in the operating system. It works as advertised, so can’t complain too much. It’s a manual operation machine and you must save the pictures to the device first, and then transfer to your computer. The date time stamp will only go back to 1980. It scanned my old slides was no problems, so I’m pleased.I’m thinking now of trying it using a stand alone charging cable without the computer to see if it’ll work and then plug the SD card into the computer to transfer the pictures. But it may need something from the computer to work since it works on the old one, but not the new one.

Ease of use cannot be over emphasized. I had collected over the years many negative formats, and this accommodated them all. Easy download to laptop. Money well spent.
