Samsung fans were given a glimpse of the brand’s first-ever QD-OLED gaming monitor at this year’s CES 2022, sparking huge excitement amongst loyal followers and display enthusiasts. Despite the brand classing the Odyssey G8QN8 as the “world’s first QD-OLED gaming monitor”, there is still very little official information regarding release dates, pricing, and specifications.
A few months after CES 2022, we are starting to see some details of the G8QN8 start to surface. Furthermore, with Dell announcing its own QD-OLED gaming monitor (Alienware AW3423DW), we can also start to speculate on performance, price, and more.

When will the Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 be released?
At the time of writing this, there is no official release date for the Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 gaming monitor. That being said, if Dell’s QD-OLED gaming monitor is anything to go by, we should expect Samsung to hit the market in Q3 of 2022.
Of course, with no official release date, this is all speculation. However, we can’t see Samsung giving Dell complete control over the QD-OLED gaming monitor demographic for too long.

Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 specifications: what we know so far
As far as specifications go, there is still very little official information available for the new Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 gaming monitor. Having said that, Samsung has stated that the G8QN8 will feature a 3440 x 1440p screen resolution, 1800R curvature, 0.1ms response time, and native 175Hz refresh rate.
The 21:9 ultrawide gaming monitor will also feature an impressive super-thin profile which, according to Samsung, will measure in at 5.9mm in places. Of course, this can be attributed to the QD-OLED panel technology found at the heart of this monitor, with no need for a generic CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight.
During the CES 2022, the Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 also received a CES innovation award for being “the world’s first QD-OLED panel”. The official CES Innovation Award page stated the following about the G8QN8 QD-OLED monitor:
“the ultra-slim Samsung Odyssey G8QNB 34” Gaming Monitor will be the world’s first Quantum Dot OLED (QD-OLED) gaming monitor, offering the best of both QLED and OLED screen technology. With high-performance features like a 175Hz refresh rate and 0.1ms response time, Odyssey G8QNB will give gamers a competitive edge. The 1800R curvature offers an immersive experience of this ultra-wide quad high definition (UWQHD) resolution display with vivid colours. It’s also the world’s slimmest gaming monitor, being as thin as 5.9mm, allowing it to fit in with any gaming setup, while also offering smart features around gaming, entertainment and productivity.“

Will the Samsung QD-OLED monitor suffer burn-in?
One of the big talking points that currently surrounds the new QD-OLED technology is burn-in. Permanent burn-in, or image retention, was a flaw found in original OLED TVs and OLED monitors. While the risk of permanent burn-in is still a feature of modern OLEDs, many are questioning whether the new QD-OLED panels will fall victim to the same flaw.
The answer is, yes they will. Samsung has stated that the G8QN8 will feature a new anti burn-in feature which should reduce the risk of image retention exponentially. The feature is called Real-time ISC (image sticking correction) and will decrease the chance of burn-in for QD-OLED panels. Samsung goes on to say that, while QD-OLED displays will be at risk of burn-in, they won’t be nearly as susceptible as LG Display’s WOLED.
Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 price
Right now, we don’t have an official price for the Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 price. That being said, we can make an informed decision based on the other QD-OLED panels that feature in today’s market.
Of course, Dell’s Alienware AW3423DW is the main rival to Samsung’s new QD-OLED panel, and that has been officially priced at $1,300 ($1,650 CAD, £1,099). When you consider some of the mini-LED alternatives that currently reside in today’s market, you’d have to say that QD-OLED technology looks like an incredibly attractive prospect at that price.
With the G8QN8 featuring many of the same specifications found in the AW3423DW, you’d have to speculate that it will retail for a similar price point. Of course, this is again all speculation, however, we’ll be keeping this page right up to date with all the latest Samsung Odyssey G8QN8 prices as and when they’re announced.
