Every year, Samsung gives us a peek into the future with their latest Galaxy smartphones, and they’re not looking to stop this tradition with this year’s Samsung Unpacked event, where they’re looking to show off the Galaxy S22 line of phones, in addition to the Galaxy Tab S8 series of tablets. These will be using cutting-edge tech, and while the event is coming slightly later than we’re used to in the year, they are still going to be announcing the products that everyone expects, and potentially even a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra that’s poised to take the mantle of the Note series, if their teasers are to be believed.

Where to watch Samsung Unpacked livestream

To get your eyes on the latest news about the Samsung Galaxy S22, Galaxy Tab S8 and more, you’re going to want to tune in to the Samsung Unpacked event live stream, which is happening at 10 AM ET / 7 AM PT / 3 PM GMT on February 9, or at 1 AM AEST on February 10. The event itself will be live-streamed on Samsung’s official YouTube channel. We’ve popped it down below for you just to make sure that you’re not going to miss out on any of the action happening later today.

Samsung Galaxy S22: Everything you need to know

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is going to be announced at the Samsung Unpacked event on February 9. With an official release expected to be on February 24, which is right before Mobile World Congress 2022 hits. The device itself is going to have a high-powered chipset, either the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200, though Samsung’s chip this year has been known to be cause for concern for the company, and could be related to why we’re seeing the new Galaxy handsets slightly later than usual this year.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S22 in three different flavors, the base Galaxy S22, a Galaxy S22 Plus and finally, a Galaxy S22 Ultra model, with all the bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at. The base hardware may be similar, but we’ll break down all of the differences that you need to know about right here.

Samsung Galaxy S22, Plus & Ultra specifications

S22 Ultra

Right now, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S22 line of phones have formidable, flagship specifications. Though the Galaxy S22 Plus looks like a good option right now, it might become a bit of a half measure for some users. It is without a doubt superior to the vanilla model, but we then have to look at each device’s price to ensure that you’re getting the most value for your money if you’re looking to pre-order one for yourself. The 1TB model of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is bound to cost a pretty penny, so be sure to carefully consider if you really need that amount of storage on your mobile device.

Additionally, the displays on every phone in the S22 line are due to be LTPO panels, which can dynamically scale their refresh rates all the way from 120Hz to 1Hz, which looks to help you save on battery life while in use. In addition to this, the S22 Plus and Ultra look to sport panels that top out at a brightness of 1,750 nits, which is frankly unreal, meaning that you should have no issues with the brightness of your display while out and about.

Samsung Galaxy S22, Plus & Ultra price

The Samsung Galaxy S22 is poised to be launching at €849, with the Galaxy S22 Plus starting from €1,049 and the Galaxy S22 Ultra starting at €1,249 according to leaks from Roland Quandt. These prices correlate with reports that the Galaxy S22 series will be experiencing a slight bump in the price of around €100/$100 across the board. While somewhat disappointing, with the current global semiconductor shortage, it’s nothing to really be surprised about. Unfortunately, pricing is just going to be higher than usual, and we might not see them go back down to previous levels again. Additionally, the leaks do not state how much the 1TB model will cost. Regardless, if you take this pricing into context when looking at the Google Pixel 6, it can be viewed as pretty heinous, but it remains to be seen if the competition will also release new pricing with models releasing in 2022 in accordance with this price bump that we’ve seen thus far.

Samsung Galaxy S22 design

S22

Samsung is not looking to break the wheel when designing the Galaxy S22, the vanilla model has a lovely rounded look, with a vertical array of triple cameras on the back. It looks fantastic, and while yes, it’s still two slabs of glass and a bit of silicon in the middle, it still looks pretty great. This is notable because we’ve previously seen. However, only the Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus share this design. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, on the other hand, sports a look that’s more befitting of a phone from the Galaxy Note line of phones, with five cameras on the rear array, and a very rectangular look, Samsung may be entirely replacing the Note line of devices with the ‘Ultra’ line, and bringing it all under one single product stack. Hell, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is also poised to come with a slot for an S Pen. You can take a look at all of these devices side-by-side courtesy of Yogesh Brar on Twitter.

As for colors, the Samsung Galaxy S22 is due to launch in Black, White, Green, Pink and Gold for the vanilla and Galaxy S22 Plus models, whereas the Galaxy S22 Ultra will be launching with Black, White, Green and Dark Red models. The design of these devices isn’t monumentally different to what we’ve seen before. But, smartphones are now long past the point where you’d often look and stare at a new, weird and wonderful design from manufacturers. The standard form-factors are now long figured out and refined, with the exception of the burgeoning foldable options. Phones have gotten more boring, that’s for certain, and it’s ultimately down to you as to whether or not this particular upgrade is going to be worth it for you or now.

Samsung Galaxy S22 camera specs

The Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus are poised to enjoy incremental upgrades over the S21 series, with a generic 50MP wide shooter for its main snapper. Additionally, they are also going to be equipped with telephoto and ultrawide options, too. The telephoto on the S22 and S22 Plus are both just 3x, which is fine, there are very few manufacturers who are pushing into the zoom race, so this is more than adequate. As for the S22 Ultra, it possesses a more powerful 108MP wide shooter, in addition to a secondary, 10x optical telephoto lens, meaning that you are easily able to punch in for long-distance shots.

Can the Samsung Galaxy S22 do 8K video?

If we go by the fact that the S21 is able to capture in 8K, then yes, but the art of filming in 8k at more than 24fps may be a fool’s game for most people’s general usage. It may be better to film in 4K to save on storage, and maximise your frame rate otherwise. Very few people aside from content creators need an 8K resolution, as it will help you to zoom in on the frame without any theoretical loss of quality of you were to render in 4K. Unless you own an 8K TV, it’s pretty pointless. 8K TVs are going to become the standard in the next decade or so, but until then, 4K is more than good enough to keep you going.
