Lego and Epic Games today (April 7, 2022) released news of their new partnership, focussed on creating a safe and fun place for kids to enjoy the Metaverse.

In the official press release, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said that the game developer is “excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining and made for kids and families.” Similarly, Niels B Christiansen, CEO of The Lego Group, is quoted as saying, “We look forward to working with Epic Games to shape [an] exciting and playful future.”

Not only will the Metaverse space be a place for children and families to play and have fun, it seems Lego and Epic Games have plans to make a safe space for children to become “confident creators”. Above all, the keyword throughout the entire press release was “safe,” with both companies of course wanting to build somewhere online that is made for kids, allowing them to explore the Metaverse with privacy and security.

The Lego Group brings a wealth of experience to this project, having created Lego Life in 2016, the world’s first fully live-moderated social app for children. Meanwhile, of course, Epic Games have Fortnite – one of the most popular video games among a young audience. Not only that, but they have an expertise in building creative tools for young people to be able to create for themselves, inspiring the next generation of game developers and creators. As noted in the press release, Epic Games also acquired SuperAwesome in 2016, a company at the forefront of creating safe online environments for under-16s.

In practise, we don’t yet know what the two companies have in mind. Perhaps their own version of Roblox or Club Penguin? Yet another in the long line of kid-friendly(ish) online environments to play, build, create and make friends. It’s a nice idea in theory, we’ll just have to wait and see what comes of it in reality.
