Tartaglia Ascension Stat

All characters in Genshin Impact have a particular stat that levels up alongside their base stats. For Tartaglia, this extra stat is Hydro DMG Bonus. This will boost the DMG of all his Hydro attacks.

Tartaglia Talent Materials

In order to make Tartaglia stronger, you’ll need to upgrade his talents. The materials you will need are:

  • Recruit’s Insignia
  • Sergeant’s Insignia
  • Lieutenant’s Insignia
  • Teachings of Freedom
  • Guide to Freedom
  • Philosophies of Freedom
  • Shard of a Foul Legacy

The Teachings, Guide and Philosophies of Freedom can be obtained by completing the Domain of Mastery: Frosted Altar every Monday, Thursday and Sunday. Meanwhile, the Shard of a Foul Legacy is a potential drop from the Weekly Childe Boss.

Tartaglia Best Weapons

As a Main DPS, Tartaglia has plenty of good weapon options. Some weapons you could use are:

Polar Star 5-star
Thundering Pulse 5-star
Skyward Harp 5-star
Amos’ Bow 5-star
The Viridescent Hunt 4-star
Rust 4-star
Mouun’s Moon 4-star
The Stringless 4-star

Tartaglia works very well with either Polar Star or Thundering Pulse. Polar Star has a decent CRIT Rate substat (33.1% at Level 90) and will essentially increase his ATK by various stacks when his Normal Attacks, Charged Attacks, Elemental Skill or Elemental Burst hit opponents – which he’ll proc easily and regularly. It also increases his Elemental Skill and Burst DMG by 12%. Thundering Pulse has a very high CRIT DMG substat of 66.2% at Level 90, and will increase his Normal Attack DMG by various stacks. It also increases his ATK by a set amount of 20%. Alternatively, Skyward Harp can also work well on him thanks to its 22.1% CRIT Rate substat and additional 20% CRIT DMG. Amos’ Bow is a good stat stick thanks to the huge amount of ATK it gives, but its effect isn’t the most beneficial on him, especially when compared to the other 5-star weapons.

He also has a few 4-star Bows that he can use. The Viridescent Hunt will give a good amount of CRIT Rate, and has a chance to deal extra DMG. It will also group enemies together which is very handy. The Rust is another decent option, thanks to its high ATK% substat (41.3% at Level 90) and its passive, which increases Normal Attack DMG by 40% – or 80% at Refinement 5, which is absolutely huge and not too difficult to get ahold of. It does decrease Charged Attack DMG, but this can be negotiated somewhat by using 5 Normal Attacks for every Charged Attack in your rotations. Mouun’s Moon can work on a more Burst DPS-focused build, since it increases Elemental Burst DMG. Finally, The Stringless can work nicely on Tartaglia; Since he’ll be proccing a few Elemental Reactions, the Elemental Mastery substat is actually quite nice. Its passive is also quite good: it increases Elemental Skill and Burst DMG by 24% – or 48% at Refinement 5, which is fairly significant. However, this Elemental Skill buff doesn’t apply to Tartaglia’s Hydro-infused attacks, only the initial instance of Hydro DMG it deals; therefore this weapon is more suited to a Burst DPS-focused build.

Tartaglia Best Artifacts

His best Artifact set is easily 4-Piece Heart of Depth. The 2-Piece set will increase his Hydro DMG by 15% which is very nice, and the 4-Piece set increase his Normal and Charged Attack DMG by 30% for 15s, which works very well with his playstyle since this is about as long as you’ll be auto-attacking with him. If you’re focusing more on using him as a Burst DPS, then 2-Piece Noblesse Oblige with 2-Piece Heart of Depth is viable. Alternatively, if you have a good set you could try 4-Piece Echoes of an Offering, which will increase his ATK by 15% and give his Normal Attacks a chance to deal increased DMG. While this set can work on him quite well, the DMG increase is a bit inconsistent especially when compared to Heart of Depth, so keep that in mind.

For low-level players, 4-Piece Martial Artist works well until you’re able to get higher level Artifacts.

For your Artifact main stats, you will want to run:

Sands ATK%
Goblet Hydro DMG Bonus
Circlet CRIT DMG / Rate

In terms of Artifact substats, you’ll want to focus on ATK%, Energy Recharge, Elemental Mastery and both CRIT DMG and CRIT Rate.

How to use Tartaglia

His Aimed Shot Charged Attacks will apply the Riptide Status to enemies, which deals consecutive bouts of AoE DMG. When defeating an enemy affected by Riptide, it creates a Hydro burst that inflicts the Riptide status on nearby opponents hit. However, his Ascension Talent Sword of Torrents, makes it so that when Tartaglia is in Foul Legacy: Raging Tide’s Melee stance, on dealing a CRIT hit, Normal and Charged Attacks apply the Riptide status effects to opponents.

His Elemental Skill, Foul Legacy: Raging Tide, unleashes a set of weaponry made of pure water, dealing Hydro DMG to surrounding opponents and entering Melee Stance. In this Stance, Tartaglia’s Normal and Charged Attacks change: he performs up to 6 consecutive Hydro Strikes with his Normal Attacks, and his Charged Attack consumes a certain amount of Stamina to unleash a cross slash, dealing Hydro DMG. Bear in mind that you cannot use a Plunging Attack while in this stance. Hitting an opponent affected by Riptide with a melee attack unleashes a Riptide Slash that deals AoE Hydro DMG. DMG dealt in this way is considered Elemental Skill DMG, and can only occur once every 1.5s.

His Elemental Burst, Havoc: Obliteration, performs different attacks based on what Stance Tartaglia is in when casting. When in Ranged Stance, he swiftly fires a Hydro-imbued magic arrow, dealing AoE Hydro DMG to all surrounding opponents and applying the Riptide status. When in Melee Stance, he performs a slash with a large AoE, dealing massive Hydro DMG to all surrounding opponents, which triggers Riptide Blast. Riptide Blast clears the opponent’s current Riptide Status and triggers a Hydro Explosion that deals AoE Hydro DMG. DMG dealt in this way is considered Elemental Burst DMG.

As an on-field Main DPS, Tartaglia will mainly be using his Hydro-infused Normal Attacks and triggering Riptide explosions, whilst also creating Vaporize or Electro-Charged Reactions with your off-field supports. Despite being a Hydro Main DPS, you won’t want to use the entirety of his Skill, since the longer you engage it, the longer his Skill’s CD will become – up to 45s. Since that’s a huge amount of downtime, you’ll be losing a lot of DPS. Therefore, you’ll want to swap out of Melee Stance after about 9s, which gives his Skill a 15s CD. During his Skill’s CD  you’ll want to switch in your supports and use their Skills / Bursts, ready for Tartaglia’s next rotation.

Speaking of supports, you have a few options depending on what comp you want to use. Tartaglia works well on either Vaporize or Electro-Charged teams. For a Vaporize team, you’ll want to use Xiangling, Bennett and either Sucrose or Kazuha. For an Electro-Charged comp, you’ll want to use two Electro characters, such as Beidou, Fischl and Raiden, and either Sucrose or Kazuha. Both these teams make good use of Tartaglia’s quick Hydro application, meaning you’ll be able to proc plenty of reactions and deal lots of DMG. As always, your Anemo characters will be able to debuff enemies thanks to 4-Piece VV’s effect.
