If you’re a Genshin Impact player, you might have heard the word “meta” being used in the community in regards to certain characters, builds and team comps. Considering the game is an open-world RPG with no competitive online play, the concept of there even being a meta might seem bizarre, if not a bit overdramatic. However, there exists a meta for one singular reason: Spiral Abyss. Here’s what you need to know about this mysterious dungeon.
What is Spiral Abyss?
Spiral Abyss is the greatest challenge Genshin Impact has to offer. It consists of 12 Floors, each with 3 Chambers, with each Floor only unlocking after you sufficiently clear the previous Floor. Your task is simple: complete all 12 Floors, in exchange for rewards such as Primogems, Mora and Artifacts. Each Chamber will reward you with up to 3 Stars, depending on how quickly you beat it, with a total number of 9 Stars to be won on each Floor.
However, to beat Floor 12 and get the maximum amount of rewards, you’ll need to invest all your resources, time, and in some cases, real-life money to make your characters the strongest they can possibly be. Luckily for you, we have character guides for every character in the game to help you build your characters effectively.
The first 8 Floors of Spiral Abyss will always have the same enemies and challenges, and once you’ve beaten them, you’ll never have to play through them ever again (unless you want to go back and get any Stars that you might have missed.) However, Floors 9-12 will change every couple months or so, meaning you’ll face new combinations of enemies. Therefore, you’ll need to build up a wide range of your characters to ensure you’re prepared to face any enemy. On top of that, Spiral Abyss will reset approximately every two weeks, meaning your Stars will be wiped and you can challenge the Abyss again for more rewards.
There are also several restrictions in Spiral Abyss: you cannot consume food, you cannot change your party members, you cannot switch up your Artifacts or weapons, and you cannot level up or Ascend characters. Before you challenge a Floor, you must choose your team beforehand. And, starting at Floor 5, you have to prepare two teams. This is because from Floor 5 onwards, each Chamber has two halves that must be completed.
Each Floor has different Ley Line Disorders, which give buffs or debuffs to characters, enemies, or both. Additionally, at the start of each Chamber, you can select one Benediction of the Abyss. Different Benedictions have different effects and durations, so choose wisely.
Spiral Abyss Location
To unlock Spiral Abyss itself, you must be Adventure Rank 20 or above. Spiral Abyss is located on a faraway island east of Mondstadt, called Musk Reef. You won’t be able to reach it by swimming alone – even with food buffs. Instead, there’s a much more convenient solution. Travel to Cape Oath, where you’ll have to follow 3 Seelies to their courts. Once you’ve done so, an air current will appear which will lift you to a portal high in the air. This portal will transport you to Musk Reef, and the circular structure there is the gateway to Spiral Abyss. Good luck!
