Scheduled to be officially announced next week on the 21st, images of the upcoming Panasonic GH6 have leaked a little early. Two images have gotten out so far courtesy of Asobinet which show the front of the camera as well as what appears to possibly be cooling vents. Whether or not it’s active cooled or not is obviously unknown, but it seems Panasonic is taking potential overheating issues seriously.
While there haven’t really been any specs announced (or leaked) yet for the GH6, the information given during the GH6 development announcement did suggest that it’s going to be a significant upgrade over the GH5 (and GH5 Mark II), offering 5.7K video at up to 60 frames per second as well as 4K at 120fps. So, keeping it cool will definitely be a priority.
The images don’t show much of the camera’s top view, although the shutter button is the usual black instead of the red “record” button we’ve come to associate with more video-oriented cameras. This tells me that it probably has a similar arrangement up top to the GH5 with a standard shutter button for both photos and video (and half-press to prefocus) as well as a separate dedicated start/stop video recording button.
What is interesting, though, is that there’s a red button on the front of the body below the lens release, suggesting that perhaps it might have another record button specifically targeted towards vloggers. This would make sense, given that when the GH5 was released, pretty much every vlogger on YouTube seemed to switch to it. And… well, it’s one of the reasons I own a GH5, too.
Some commenters on social media have hypothesised that this might mean the GH6 is targeted more towards social media content creators and not the “serious filmmakers” the GH5 was aimed at, but that second leaked image above shows a cine lens. Not exactly the kind of thing you’d usually vlog with. I don’t think the two target markets are mutually exclusive anyway, but if that is an extra record button on the front, it’s certainly going to make it appeal to vloggers.
All Panasonic have said about the GH6 so far is:
- It’ll be announced on February 21st, 2021
- It has a new high-speed sensor & new Venus engine “never been seen before on a Lumix camera”
- 10-bit 4:2:2: DCI 4K 60p video with unlimited record time
- 10-bit 4K 120p HFR/VFR recording
- 10-bit 5.7K 60p video
- Target price – $2,500(ish)
There don’t seem to have been any other leaks to nail down more specific specs, but given that the complete GH5 Mark II specs leaked two whole weeks ahead of the GH5 Mark II announcement and OM Digital had its new OM-1 specs leaked five days before the official announcement, it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw some come in the next few days before the official Panasonic announcement on the 21st.
We’ll keep you posted if we hear more.
