Elden Ring’s landscape is dotted with Minor Erdtrees. Visiting these sites is very worthwhile, as doing so will grant you Crystal Tears to mix in your Flask of Wondrous Physick. But it isn’t as easy as simply walking up to the trees and claiming their prize. Minor Erdtrees are guarded by Erdtree Avatars, fearsome bosses that guard their Erdtrees staunchly. We’ll walk you through how to defeat the first of these foes in our Elden Ring guide.
How to defeat the Erdtree Avatar
Before focusing on the boss, make sure to clear the area of smaller foes first. Spear-wielding enemies called Erdtree Guardians tend to appear close to minor Erdtrees. And they can sneak up on you without warning. There’s nothing worse than keeping a close eye on the boss, only to be blindsided by an otherwise insignificant foe.
The Erdtree Avatar’s attacks cover a wide range, but the boss’s inherent mobility is slow and stilted. Aside from the large pots around the base of the minor Erdtree, the area in which you find the Erdtree Avatar is wide open. If you feel confident in your riding skills in Elden Ring, you can use Torrent to dart in and out of the Erdtree Avatar’s range, taking swipes as you go. Bear in mind, it is all too easy for the Avatar to knock you off Torrent if its attacks connect, leaving you extremely vulnerable.
Weeping Penninsula Erdtree Avatar Boss mechanics
The Avatar may swing forward at you with an overhead slam of its weapon. This is among its quickest attacks, so always be ready while the creature is at mid-range.
The avatar can jump and smash back down into the ground extremely quickly. This will deal the highest chunk of damage of any of their attacks. A key part of fighting this boss up close is learning to predict when this move will come out while fighting up close. Whether it is worth staying close and getting extra hits in or backing off to reduce the chance of being hit by a devastating single attack is up to you.
After certain attacks, globes of light appear in the air around the avatar, hanging still for a moment before shooting thin rays of light at you. This attack can be avoided by maintaining distance from the boss and continually rolling until the globes dissipate. Being mindful of your surroundings is key in Elden Ring, getting caught on a piece of the environment while rolling can lead to being hit by several rays. And getting too caught up in dodging this attack while close may mean that the avatar itself will hit you, as it is free to move and act while this is happening.
Keep it up and the Erdtree Avatar will fall, granting you two Crystal Seeds for your flask. The Opaline Bubbletear grants you a one-time shield that can take hefty damage. The Crimsonburst bubbletear grants you a small amount of health regeneration for a short period of time.
