CLASSIC CHESS PIE – The Southern Lady Cooks

Classic Chess Pie - The Southern Lady Cooks

This classic chess pie is a family favorite. Chess Pie is sometimes called vinegar pie because you put vinegar in the recipe.  This is one of my favorite pies.  If you have never made chess pie, you will love it. It is perfect for any gathering as most people love it. You may also want to try our pineapple chess pie.

Classic Chess Pie Ingredients Needed:

Dish pie shell

Butter

White Granulated Sugar

Vanilla flavoring

Eggs

Buttermilk

Cornmeal (I used white self-rising cornmeal)

White distilled vinegar

Recently someone asked if you have to use the cornmeal. Cornmeal is what makes it a chess pie so yes.. you need the cornmeal. It really adds to the texture and makes this pie delicious and unique. The difference between this pie and a custard pie is the addition of the cornmeal. This is one of our favorite pies and we have many different versions on our website. Chess pies are so easy to make!

Once the pie cools to room temperature I do keep it in the refrigerator. It is also perfectly normal for a chess pie to crack on top. Don’t be alarmed if that happens. If you find that your pie is still slightly runny in the center. Turn off the oven and leave the pie inside for 5-10 minutes.
