Final Fantasy XV has gone against all the odds and became the fourth best-selling game in Square Enix’s catalog, selling over 10 million copies since it was first released. It might have taken the game around six years to hit this milestone, but this makes it part of Square Enix history.
Final Fantasy XV’s Troubled History
Final Fantasy XV was released back in 2016 and centers around the adventures of Noctis Lucis Caelum as he goes on a quest to discover himself and save the world. You’re joined on your journey by three of your closest friends, and along the way, your bonds of brotherhood only deepen and become more apparent. The game began initially as Final Fantasy Versus XIII but was changed to a mainline game after it had been in development for six years.
Then-Director Tetsuya Nomura was replaced by Hajime Tabata, creating a situation in which content had to be changed or adapted to make sense on the eighth generation of consoles. If you watch the original trailers for Versus XIII, you can see the DNA that it shares with Final Fantasy XV, but you can also pinpoint parts and mechanics that were ultimately cut from the game. Despite this development trouble, the game has now sold ten million copies.
Ten Million Final Fantasy XV Copies Sold
Ten million sales mean that Final Fantasy XV has become the fourth highest selling game in Square Enix history, beaten only by Rise Of The Tomb Raider (2015, 11.8m copies), Tomb Raider (2013, 14.5m copies), and FFVII (1997, 18.45m copies). It’s quite the interesting number, not just because of how high it is, but because the fan reception of the game was somewhat mixed on the story side of things.
The story was in an unfinished state upon release after going through years of changes during development. The narrative was only fully completed when a book was later released, giving extra context and plot details that were either cut or canceled from the actual game. It’s nice to see a game like this become such a popular game sales-wise, and we’re not saying that because the writer has a Final Fantasy XV tattoo.
