Capel Rugs reports that it enjoyed a busy High Point Market this month as retailers and designers flocked to its showroom eager to see and buy new rugs to spice up their store assortments. Market winners included Fresh Braids and updated Oushak and Gabbeh patterns. Retailers applauded the new ‘Tradition with a Twist’ designs. Hot new collections included Verve, Carrara, Naturelle, Avery and Gabby.
“We had a great market,” said Cameron Capel, president of sales and marketing for Capel Rugs. “We had a steady stream of appointments scheduled every day, and every retailer and designer we expected showed up. The volume of order placements and commitments also was quite strong — matching or exceeding the level of activity we experienced before the pandemic.”
“It was so nice to meet with our customers in person again!” Capel added.
“Verve sports a mix of funky colors, while Carrara features a vintage erased pattern enlivened with color,” Capel said. “Naturelle is neutral in tone but highly textural, and Avery boasts a laid-back, easy vibe. Gabby combines natural colors with simple designs for a look that is easy to use and layer.”
Leading off the hits for Capel this market was Verve, a new hand-knotted collection from India made of 100% wool. The initial introduction features two colors — silver multi and ecru multi — with more colors likely to follow at future markets. Six sizes are available, including 2’6″ x 9′, 3′ x 5′, 5′ x 8′, 9′ x 12′ and 10′ x 14′, and a 5′ x 8′ model may retail for under $1,299.
“The Verve collection of updated Oushak patterns lives up to its name,” Capel said. “These fresh, unexpected designs are distinguished by their vitality and liveliness.”
Also doing well in High Point was Avery, a new machine made collection in 100% New Zealand wool featuring five patterns with a high level of detail and a vintage, laid-back vibe. The range of earthy, subtle colorways includes stormy gray, stone multi, onyx/cream, slate/linen and merlot.
Gabby, a new hand loomed collection made in India of 100% New Zealand wool, also won favor. Simple yet elegant, Gabby’s subtly colored Gabbeh patterns combine abstract geometric designs on open fields of color. Four colorways are available — granite, linen, oatmeal and wheat. Sizes include 2’6″ x 9′, 3′ x 5′, 5′ x 8′, 8′ x 10′, 9′ x 12′ and 10′ x 14′. A 5′ x 8′ rug may retail for under $749.
“Gabby’s subtly colored Gabbeh patterns make an understated, refined statement that is perfect for today’s relaxed lifestyles,” Capel said.
Carrara, a new hand knotted collection inspired by Renaissance art, was another new design that won favor for Capel Rugs during market. Made in India with a luxurious wool and viscose blend, Carrara features a beautifully distressed finish and earthy colors inspired by mineral pigments. Options include four colorways — multi, beige blue, aqua and charcoal multi — and four sizes.
Two new braided collections made in the USA also were in the spotlight in the Capel Rugs showroom at the April market. Scoring particularly well with retailers was Naturelle, an all-natural, undyed 100% wool area rug. “Naturelle is warm, cozy and comfortable, like a favorite cable knit blanket,” Capel said.
Also drawing attention was Bambini, a super-soft, 3/8″-pile cotton chenille rug crafted for children’s rooms in six colorways.
In addition to these new designs, Capel Rugs also received kudos for new patterns and colorways added to existing collections. Among the hits were two new patterns added to Braymore, a cozy hand knotted collection made in India.
“Retailers were hungry for dynamic new rug designs,” said Capel about the company’s results this market. “With the threat of COVID finally waning, they were ready to restock their floors with creative new looks that can help them stir excitement with consumers.”
