Whether you’re new to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or returning to the game, find out how to unlock the elusive hidden Golden Mario racer.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe isn’t new. In fact, Mario Kart 8 was released on the Wii U in 2014, before Deluxe came to the Nintendo Switch shortly after the console’s 2017 release. But, thanks to the new Booster Course DLC Pass, players are returning in droves to the classic kart racing game. And, if you’re anything like us, you’re obsessed all over again.
How to unlock Gold Mario in Mario Kart 8
Whether you are coming back to the game after a break or getting to grips with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the first time, you’re here because you want to know how to unlock Gold Mario in the latest of Nintendo’s flagship racing games. Well, it’s actually pretty simple, as long as you’re speedy.
To get Gold Mario in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you will need to win every Cup in the 200CC speed group. Thankfully, you don’t need to win every race, or earn three stars, you simply need that gold trophy in all twelve Cups.
The 200CC group is the hardest set of races in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe thanks to its exhilarating speed. You’ll need to make sure your handling is up to scratch round those hairpin turns (especially on Rainbow Road). Also, get in some drifting practice time in order to help you make those tight turns, and get a speed boost to boot. Finally, make sure you make the best use of items you can, and you should be able to get the win. If you’re struggling, you can always turn on smart-steering from the pause menu.
How to escape that pesky Blue Shell
Of course, your biggest worry when trying to win every race is the Blue Shell that targets the player in first place. It’s almost inescapable, but it is possible, and you’ll want to know how when trying to unlock Gold Mario in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
In order to avoid the Blue Shell, you will, unfortunately, need the Super Horn item, so you won’t be able to do it every time. If you do happen to get a Super Horn, we recommend saving it. Of course, you run the risk of losing it if you take damage, but you’ll be glad you waited if you see that Blue Shell coming from behind. Wait until the Blue Shell is circling your head, and hit the item button (ZL or left button), and – if you’ve timed it right – the Blue Shell will disappear.
Put all of this together, and you should be able to win those 12 gold trophies needed to unlock the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Gold Mario character. You can take as many tries as you need, and, remember, you don’t need to win every race, just place first overall. Good luck!
