While there are plenty of different weapons in Elden Ring, how powerful they are isn’t really as important as how much you like and can use these weapons. It’s all well and good having a weapon with high damage output, but what’s the point if you don’t know the attack pattern well enough to actually hit anything with it? One great weapon for high-Strength characters is Gargoyle’s Great Axe. This weapon has a lot of versatility, pretty low dex requirements, and a pretty impressive bit of damage output that will melt through the boss’s health once you’ve upgraded it enough.
Where is the Gargoyle’s Great Axe in Elden Ring?
You can find this Axe as a reward for taking out a specific field boss, or at least, it’s sort of a field boss. The creature in question doesn’t have a giant health bar at the bottom of the screen, so it probably doesn’t count. Either way, you’re going to need to get yourself to the Altus Plateau before you have any hope of getting this weapon. Once you do, head for the big walls that surround the capital, once inside, find the Outer Wall Phantom Tree point of grace on the western side of the city. From there, head North up the flight of stairs and make sure that you’re equipped for a fight.
Beating the Gargoyle
The boss is a bit tough, but mostly due to its strange attack patterns. It doesn’t have insanely high health or anything like that, but its attacks do high damage and you’re forced to fight it on a flight of stairs, which isn’t ideal. There are a few different approaches that you can take depending on how you play the game. As per usual, with any field boss taking it on with Shadow is a pretty safe approach. Use Shadow’s extra movement speed to run guerilla attacks on the enemy and run out when you need to heal. The only thing to be careful of is the fact that the gargoyle will chase you pretty darn far sometimes.
If you’re more in the mood for a straight-up fight, then you should rely on your ash summons. This boss is susceptible to Scarlet Rot, so if you have that one Ash Summon that is a solid choice. If not, an upgraded pack of wolves would work, or actually anything with decent enough health to draw the enemy’s attention. Focus on big damage hits during long recovery moments and you should be done with the fight before you even know it. Once he’s down, you’ll automatically receive the Gargoyle’s Great Axe in your inventory.
What is the Gargoyle’s Great Axe useful for?
As with the other weapons in the Gargoyle’s set, you’ll find this axe great for its versatility. It has high damage output, and low dex requirements that make it ideal for a strength-only melee build. Because it doesn’t have a unique ash of war as well, you can swap in any affinity or special ability that you like, so it’ll adapt to your own strengths too. The only thing to watch out for here is how slow some of those attacks are, so consider that before you try taking on any speedy bosses.
