After months of waiting, you can now encounter the ferocious (but totally adorable) Warden in Minecraft ahead of 2022’s The Wild Update.
While The Wild Update was only announced during Minecraft Live 2021, Minecraft fans have been waiting for The Warden since its initial reveal in October 2020. Mojang Studios delayed the release of The Warden both to get it right, and to relieve the pressure on its staff, a decision which was welcomed by most fans. However, while still not available in a full 1.19 snapshot just yet, The Warden has been released into the wild, and can be found in Minecraft right now.
Where is the Warden in Minecraft?
The Warden – as we were told in the initial Mojang reveal – is found in the Deep Dark, a new Minecraft Biome located deep underground. This new Biome is also coming with the Wild Update, although the current 1.18 version of Minecraft does go down to -64 Blocks. The Deep Dark will be roughly found between levels 15 and -64.
Minecraft’s new Ancient Cities
In the Deep Dark, you’ll be able to find a brand new Minecraft structure, Ancient Cities – and this is where The Warden dwells. The incredible new structure is one of the biggest in Minecraft, and can span hundreds of blocks underground. Formed of a mixture of new and old blocks, you’ll be able to gather plenty of grey wool in Ancient Cities (great for muffling the sound of your footsteps), as well as a bunch of Deepslate varieties. The new blocks you’ll find in Ancient Cities, meanwhile, include Skulk blocks, Candles and the all-new Reinforced Deepslate.
Once you’re in an Ancient City, wander around and you’ll be sure to trigger a new Sculk Sensor or Sculk Shrieker. You’ll know when you have, as you’ll be stricken by the Darkness effect, and won’t be able to see past your own hand. At this point, you’ll want to listen out (or watch your subtitles) for the Warden ominously advancing on your location.
Even though it’s a total cutie to look at, you don’t want to get too close to The Warden, as it’s almost impossible to defeat. Instead, you’ll need to use skill to evade the new Minecraft mob and it’s super hearing. You see, The Warden is blind, so while it cannot see you, it can hear you, aided all the while by those pesky Sculk Shriekers giving away your location. If you weren’t clever enough to bring projectiles with you as you entered the Deep Dark, you may have found some snowballs in nearby Chests. Chuck a couple into the distance to distract The Warden – and make a hasty exit.
How to find The Warden in Minecraft Java Edition
At the time of writing, you can only play alongside (i.e run away from) The Warden on Minecraft Java Edition, and you can only do so using the first 1.19 Experimental Snapshot.
Anyone can play an experimental snapshot on Minecraft Java Edition, but you need to download and install it first. Luckily, we have a step-by-step guide on exactly how to download and install a Minecraft experimental snapshot. Since we’ve hopefully made it so that this guide can stand the test of time, you’ll need to head to Mojang’s A Very Scary Snapshot article to download the specific snapshot featuring the first look at The Deep Dark.
Once you’re in the first 1.19 Experimental Snapshot, the choice is yours whether you want to cheat and head straight to the Deep Dark – and directly to an Ancient City – or survive as normal and find The Warden organically. So, if you’re as impatient as we are, we also have a guide to locating Ancient Cities in Minecraft.
