The ThinkPad X13s has caught the interest of laptop enthusiasts the world over. Officially announced at the Mobile World Congress 2022, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s is an ultra-thin general productivity laptop, with a superbly long battery life and the first ever 5nm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 CPU. The Thinkpad X13s release date is sometime in May 2022 in US markets at least, though we’re still waiting to hear about a specific date from Lenovo, or when other regions can get their hands on it.

The Thinkpad X13s price starts at $1,100 / €1399 MSRP, though the higher-spec options will increase in price according to how much your specific unit.

Improvements of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s 2022

• Faster CPU: The latest Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 processor means increased workload speeds up to an additional 57% over the previous gen models, with as much as 85% in multi-tasking scenarios.
• Extended battery life: Improvements in effciency thanks to the new 5nm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 arhitecture result in a superb battery life for the Thinkpad X13s. Lenovo claims up to 28 hours of general usage, though we’ll have to wait for testing to see if this holds up.
• Extra thin, extra light: The main ThinkPad X13s will have a 16:10 13.3-inch screen, though apparently different sized models will be available at a later time. The laptop only weighs 1.06 kg / 2.35lb, making it one of Lenovo’s lightest laptops. In terms of dimensions, the X13s measures: 13.4mm x 298.7mm x 206.4mm.
• Fanless design: Contributing to the slender ergonomics of the ThinkPad X13s is the lack of a fan cooling system. This also means that the machine is almost completely silent, making it ideal for any kind of quiet working environoment, or use in a public space.

• Camera & connectivity: The ultra-fast 5G support will mean greater connectivity, upload and download speeds whilst on the move, and the improved camera now has a 5-megapixel sensor with InfraRed technology.

What is Snapdragon?

Snapdragon is a line of CPUs created by Qualcomm Technologies that have up until now been primarily used to run smartphones, particularly Android mobile phones. As you’d expect from smartphone technology, the Snapdragon architecture is designed to maximize the efficiency of power usage. In recent years, Snapdragon processors have been used in ultra-thin laptops, notebooks, and tablets where battery life and portability are paramount, and the Thinkpad X13s is the latest model. Indeed the Thinkpad X13s is the first to use the most powerful CPU of the range yet: the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3.

Qualcomm Snapdragon vs M1 Apple

Most computers developed over the last several years, both desktop and laptop devices, are built around x86 CPU architecture. The introduction of Apple’s M1 architecture stirred things up a bit, and has become the technology to beat in mobile CPU technology. M1 systems offer great power and size efficiency for laptop devices, and this is what Snapdragon machines like the Thinkpad X13s will be compared against.

Previously, Snapdragon devices haven’t managed to compete with the lower-powered Apple A1 processors (used exclusively in phones) never mind the M1 chips. We’re looking forward to seeing whether Qualcomm will try and match up to the different SKUs of the M1 series (M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max from least to most powerful), though currently, it seems like they’re just going for the lower-range models.
