Peasant Bread - The Southern Lady Cooks

This Peasant Bread is a crusty, crunchy and delicious bread. My family loves this bread slathered with butter while hot.  It is very easy to make and a basic recipe you can make your own by adding different spices, etc. We love it just as the original recipe below. It would be wonderful with soup in the winter and light enough to enjoy with a salad in the summer. Only five simple ingredients and we love it!

Peasant Bread Ingredients Needed:

All Purpose Flour

Salt

Active Dry Yeast

White Granulated Sugar

Warm Water

My family has really enjoyed making our own bread! Bread can be intimidating since you are working with yeast, but once you get the hang of it, it’s so easy and a delicious addition to any meal. Plus it’s only a few simple ingredients which is so refreshing. I have actually found that my sourdough bread (recipe here) keeps much longer than store bought bread.

Another one of our favorites is this delicious White Bread. It’s super easy to make and only a few ingredients too.

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast or 2 1/4 teaspoons
  • 2 teaspoons white granulated sugar
  • 2 cups warm water
  • Add the two cups warm water to a bowl, stir in yeast, sugar and salt. Let sit for five minutes. Add flour and stir until dough forms a ball. Cover with a dish towel or cloth and place in a warm place for 1 hour.

  • Next remove cloth, punch down and divide the dough into two pieces. I use a knife to cut in half and flour my hands to handle the dough.

  • Place each piece in a 1 quart bowl that has been well greased with butter or can use 1 large bowl and not cut in half. You could use bread pans or just shape into loaves and put on baking sheet. You do not have to knead this dough.

  • Cover and let rise a second time for 45 minutes.

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees and bake for 15 minutes.

  • Turn heat down to 375 and bake for 15 more minutes.

  • I do brush the tops of the bread with melted butter before baking.

  • Let bread cool for about 15 minutes before removing from pans.

  • Makes 2 small loaves or 1 large.

If bread is not brown enough once removed from bowls, you can place back in oven on a baking sheet under the broiler for a few minutes.
