Orange Kiss Me Cake - The Southern Lady Cooks

Orange kiss me cake is a vintage recipe that was the 1950 Pillsbury bake-off winner.  This cake is delicious, keeps well in a cool place or refrigerated and would be great for any event.  My family loved this cake.  I love how well the orange and cinnamon flavors complement each other. This recipe is different in that you add the entire orange to the batter. We sometimes forget that these old tried and true recipes have been around a long time for a reason and how wonderful it is to step back in time and be able to remember the cooks before us by bringing back a piece of our past or childhood.

Orange Kiss Me Cake Ingredients Needed:

Orange

Raisins

Walnuts

All-purpose flour

White granulated sugar

Baking soda

Salt

Shortening (I use Crisco)

Milk

Eggs

These old fashioned cakes really do take me right back in time. The ingredients are so simple and things all cooks had in their kitchen back in the day. Most of the people that follow our website are still those cooks or are looking for an old timey recipe their grandmother made. My family loves the old classics and this one is definitely going on that list. It was so refreshing and you could add a frosting to the top but honestly the sugar and orange topping really goes great with the orange flavor. This cake is wonderful with coffee!

If you love old fashioned recipes then please take a moment and explore our website. So many of the classics we still enjoy and you will find those recipes by using the search box on any page. This Vanilla Wafer Cake is on one we love and this Pound Cake!

  • 1 large orange
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/3 cup walnuts chopped
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening I use Crisco
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs

Topping Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup reserved orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  • Squeeze the juice from the orange setting aside 1/3 cup juice.

  • Remove orange seeds and grind the orange along with the orange peel, the raisins and walnuts. I use a blender to do the grinding. You can use a food processor, an old-fashioned table grinder or whatever you have available. I also cut the orange in pieces with the peeling still on for grinding in the blender.

  • In a bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt.

  • Add the shortening, milk and eggs and mix with a mixer.

  • Add in the ground up orange, raisins and walnuts and continue to mix until all ingredients are wet.

  • Spray a 9 x 13 baking pan with cooking spray. Pour in the cake mixture and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until the center of the cake tests done.

  • Add topping below.

I have found that a regular orange with seeds works better than one of the seedless navel oranges when it comes to grinding the peeling.

Be sure and pin this delicious vintage cake!
